AlmavivA to digitalise Italian ports
AlmavivA, the Italian leader in Information & Communication Technology, TTS Italia ordinary member, is putting together the Port Community System, which will be made available by the end of the year, for UIRNet S.p.A., integrated with the National Logistics Platform. The Port Community System will be used to increase security, improve cooperation between operators and coordinate port business – a fundamental asset for Italy's technological infrastructure and key for operation of the whole transport and logistics chain. "The project, says Smeraldo Fiorentini, Deputy General Manager of AlmavivA's Transportation Division, confirms the Group's leadership when it comes to ICT solutions for the transport sector and for intermodal, port and city logistics. AlmavivA's work in the transport sector focuses on developing interoperability between the various logistical nodes and integrating them with the management and control bodies: the Customs Agency, Port Authorities and the National Logistics Platform”. The project, named "Integrating the National Logistics Platform with the customs-risk-analysis and Port of Taranto node-security systems", foresees the Port Community System being adopted first at the Port of Taranto. The system involves installing video surveillance and port-access control devices, and providing on-board units (OBU) for the vehicles working in the area, to allow connections to services at the port. An App will be made available to the various law-enforcement bodies to facilitate management of the port and verify the presence of authorised staff and vehicles.

How am I driving: Iveco and TNT project for road safety
Iveco, TTS Italia ordinary member, presented its new “How Am I Driving?” initiative at the Milan Expo, aimed at discouraging unsafe driving practices by the truck drivers as a new step towards road safety. The project by Iveco along with TNT will be using a process of monitoring and reporting of the truck drivers of medium and large fleets by other drivers who notice risky behaviours. This transparent model of shared social responsibility is already applied successfully in other European countries, where it has produced tangible results and created a virtuous circle by stimulating the drivers’ sense of responsibility. TNT and Iveco chose the city of Milan for the first test run in Italy to introduce this system. A sticker attached to the back of the TNT fleet vans circulating Milan provides a toll-free number – 0080056567878 - for other drivers to call when they notice unsafe behaviour of the van drivers. The Iveco Customer Service, active 24 hours a day, will collect the data which will be monitored and communicated in real time to TNT supervisors. Some studies (Fireman’s Fund Insurance) indicate that monitoring programmes reduce the risk of accidents by 22%, creating a deterrent to the drivers’ aggressive and risky behaviour that generates greater costs in terms of fuel consumption, insurance, vehicle wear and fines for traffic infractions. Data collected abroad indicates that no feedback was received for 80% of the drivers. Of the 20% of drivers reported, 10% of the calls were to praise exemplary behaviour, while only 10% concerned inappropriate conduct. The mere application of the stickers leads to a 3% reduction in accident risks. The fleet of vans that TNT Italy uses for the so-called “last-mile” delivery is a first and significant test, involving approximately 100 TNT vehicles in the project in Milan. After evaluating the results, plans are to extend the programme to other cities and new partners running professional transport fleets.

Indra deploys its management and ticketing tehnology in the buses of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, for €8.3 M
Plovdiv City Council, the second largest city in Bulgaria, has awarded Indra a contract worth €8.3M to implement state-of-the-art contactless ticketing technology and an operation assistance system (OAS) in its public transportation service. Indra will deploy its most advanced OAS technology in a control center that will provide up-to-date information about the location of every bus in the Plovdiv fleet, thanks to the use of an integrated data model for multiple bus-operators, geographical information systems, on-board equipment and mobile communications infrastructure, with 3G technology and private networks implemented by the company. This information will facilitate real-time decision-making in the event of incidents, the need for reinforcements, or detect any deviations in scheduled services. The control center will also manage the information provided to passengers through the latest-generation multimedia screens that will be installed on the city's 285 buses and at its 354 bus stops. For example, passengers will be able to find out about the upcoming bus stops, connections with other routes, possible incidents, and the ETA for the next buses. They can also obtain all of this information on their own smartphones by downloading a free application from the city's website. The Indra system will also make it much easier to schedule works on any of the routes as well as generating reports and graphs to illustrate details of the service, match it to real public demand, and therefore improve its quality while increasing output and cutting costs. The Plovdiv project includes a new contactless ticketing system to replace the current XXX system, allowing passengers to board urban buses using a contactless card that is validated simply by passing it over the reader. This will not only speed up passenger boarding but will facilitate the combined use and management of different bus routes operated by a variety of private companies. The project also contemplates the use of these cards to pay for other services provided by Plovdiv City Council, such as public parking lots, and it will be possible to top them up at 91 automatic machines and eight sales points. All the information from the central ticketing system, which will facilitate the financial management of the service, will also be collected at the control center equipped by Indra. This will include ticket validation subsystems in buses, top-ups at sales points and in automatic machines, ticket inspection using portable terminals and shell of transport tickets via the website. Moreover, the transport control center will be interconnected with the National Revenue and Bank Exchange agencies in order to fully comply with domestic laws regarding taxes and credit-card money transactions. Indra's Plovdiv project adds to its wide experience of smart technology solutions for public transportation management, with projects in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Mexico City, Medellín (Colombia), Curitiba (Brazil), Savannah (USA), Wroclaw (Poland) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Indra expands the Galileo Ground Segment whit a new station in French Polynesia for €7.3M
Indra, TTS Italia ordinary member, has just been awarded a contract for the deployment in Papeete (French Polynesia) of a new Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) Station, which will expand the ground segment of the European global positioning system, Galileo. This contract was awarded by the company Airbus Defence and Space in the UK, under a programme of and funded by the European Union. The project also includes the maintenance and evolution of all TT&C stations until 2016 for a global amount of €7.3M. The new station in Papeete will enhance Galileo's ground segment so that it can assume the control of a constellation of satellites that will grow from 8 currently in orbit to 30 satellites in 2020, upon the system's completion. Indra has won this contract after having implemented the entire current network of TT&C and Uplink stations, which manage the satellites of the Galileo system. The ground stations, together with the control centers in Germany and Italy, are the ground segment's key components. Specifically, Indra already deployed four Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) Stations that are currently in operation. These stations track the position of the orbiting satellites and transmit commands for their control. Furthermore, the company supplied the 10 Uplink Stations (ULS) that send the navigation message to the Galileo satellites. These stations are deployed worldwide to guarantee their capacity for sending and receiving data from any satellite at any time, regardless of their position. Amongst other places, they are located in Kourou (French Guiana), Kiruna (Sweden), Nouméa (New Caledonia), Réunion Island (overseas department of France) or Svalbard (Norway). Besides, Indra is responsible of the Core Computers and the Processing and Control SW of the network of Sensor Stations (GSS) that monitors the signals broadcast by the Galileo satellites; these GSS stations are deployed in more than 15 sites all over the world. The continuous availability and reliability of critical services, like search and rescue - one of the initially provided by Galileo - depend upon the correct performance of the ground stations. More services will be provided in the future, related to a diversity of sectors, such as transport, navigation, security of critical infrastructures or construction, to name just a few.
To date, Galileo is the most ambitious space initiative promoted by the European Commission and the European Space Agency. Indra has participated in the development of the entire ground infrastructure since the project's early phases. The quality of the developments completed has made Indra to be an important partner within this complex international program. The knowledge acquired by Indra since its participation in the program began over a decade ago places the company in an unbeatable position for taking advantage of the business opportunities that will arise when the system is launched and end clients demand the related services.

Indra will install its radars in the Pakistan Airports of Karachi and Lahore
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has awarded Indra, TTS Italia ordinary member, the renewal of its radar systems serving the international airports of Jinnah in Karachi and of Allama Iqbal in Lahore. The company will install a station at each of these airports equipped with primary and secondary radars to facilitate the location and identification of aircraft. This technology will increase security and allow this country to increase the number of flights it may manage. CAA Deputy Director General Air Vice Marshal Khawar Hussain stated when signing the contract that with the installation of the new radars “the number of aircraft using the Pakistani air space would be doubled, as the new and more sophisticated equipment would help reduce the distance among the aircraft”. The new systems will replace the radars currently in use, which have been in operation for nearly two decades. Through this contract, Indra strengthens its relationship as technology provider for the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority. The company had already equipped the control centers of Karachi and Lahore with its air traffic management systems and ground-to-air voice communication systems (VCSS). Indra therefore consolidates its presence in a country which in the next few years will face major technology renewal and infrastructure modernization projects. This new contract is framed within Indra's expansion process in the Asian region and in the Arabian Gulf, in which many projects for installing air traffic management systems have been awarded in countries like Turkey, Oman, Jordan, Kuwait, India, China or Vietnam, amongst others. Indra has recently completed the deployment of its systems at the Muscat International Airport and in the control center that manages Oman's airspace.

Scientific Seminar of the Italian association of transport academicians – September 2015 – Turin
It will be held in Turin on the 14 and 15 September the Scientific Seminar of the Italian association of transport academicians “Transport Systems: Methods and technologies”.
In this historical phase, methods and technologies can contribute to innovate transport systems by providing some good solutions which are in line with actual needs. Main issues are the improvement of vehicles and traffic flows efficiency, fostering a systems engineering approach and allowing the diffusion of hybrid and electric solutions for the propulsion, even rationalising travels and their energy consumption by using ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), by developing transport systems which can be sustainable through their whole life‐cycle (LCC). The main issues of this congress can be synthesised in pursuing innovative transport systems, services and solutions, taking into particular account the subjects related to a gradual independence from the main energy source transport systems are based on, in a nearly‐monopoly condition, and use of lower energy per unit mass in motorised mobility in order to reduce the energy consumption per person or per ton and ‐ consequently ‐ the greenhouse gas emissions. This aim can be pursued typically through higher capacity transport modes (e.g. trains, metros, automated people movers), when they are justified by an adequate demand in order to guarantee as far as possible fully loaded vehicles, or with a low level of black‐oil energy used for vehicles: e.g., FEV, PHEV, natural gas for heavy‐duty vehicles. An overall energy analysis applied to any transport system may synthesise most of mentioned approach, considering both motorised and non‐motorised alternatives.
The President of TTS Italia, Rossella Panero, will be the Chairman of the session “ITS modelling and applications, including safety issues”; and several ITS ordinary members will be among the speakers of the two days event: University of Rome Tor Vergata, University Mediterranea, University of Genova, University of Rome La Sapienza, Politecnico of Turin, University of Naples, University of Salerno, University of Roma Tre.
