Mauro Moretti, CEO of Trenitalia, the Italian State Railways: "Adequate resources and consistent standards for railway technology. legislator believe in the future of the train"

Technology is for the group Italian State Railways one of the pillars. The travel planner of Trenitalia, Sipax, also awarded a prize from the EU for smart mobility and it was presented in Vienna during the ITS World Congress last October. What are the next challenges your group plan to face?
The challenge is to grow, not only in Italy but also in Europe, exporting Made in Italy in the rail sector. As per Sipax we are pleased with the recognition, but we are not satisfied. The system will soon be replaced by a commercial platform even more advanced and rich in content. The goal is to provide customers of Trenitalia not only a wide range of travel solutions, but also a range of services in support of the trip, selected and developed with prestigious partners.

2012 was a record year for Frecce. The high speed is increasing, and carried about 40 million passengers. Also Frecciarossa 1000 is about to arrive, the non plus ultra of railway technology of the third millennium. What are the expectations, the scenarios and objectives the Group Trenitalia hope and aim?
Frecce point to 45 million passengers for 2013. Where the offer is of high quality, frequent, fast, comfortable, flexible and convenient train conquests significant market share. On the route Rome - Milan the market share is approaching 60%. The arrival of high-speed railway competitors, unique experience in Europe and in the world, has not prevented our Frecciarossa to further increase its customers. The arrival of Frecciarossa 1000 will give us the opportunity to further reduce journey times, offer the ultimate in terms of reliability, speed, technology to improve quality of travel, soundproofing and comfort, minimal environmental impact. And above all, it will allow us to look at the European markets, thanks to its full interoperability, which will allow us to break down all the borders in Europe, at least in terms of technology. The hope, then, is that the markets open soon in other countries and create space for a true and correct competition, to the benefit of operators, customers and sustainable development. The train is now revealing all its modernity. Policy makers in Brussels and in Rome must be aware of this and act accordingly.

The Decree Sviluppo Bis has transposed a European directive that drives the technology in transport: introduces the electronic ticket for the local public transport, the dissemination of road safety equipments, special services for road transport and computerized procedures in ports. Do you think these measures are sufficient?
Every technological innovation brings benefits. We are innovators and engine for the development of Italian companies in the sector. The Frecciarossa 1000 is an important example. And all that contributes to a more effective and efficient public transport services must be put in place. But I think we can and should do more. Rail transport has the potential that today, in our cities, is not fully exploited. Railway technology allows us to increase capacity and frequency of trains to provide a more effective service than the present, so to make our big cities more attractive. However, financial resources should be given to this, and legislative and administrative instruments consistent with these objectives are necessary as well.

TTS Italia, under request of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in collaboration with many associations of the sector, drafted the ITS National Plan that Italy is presenting in Brussels. In your opinion, what are priorities to be carried out to boost rail transport?
Our technologies are at the forefront, taken as a model in Europe and throughout the world. I mean, just to give an example, the ERTMS / ETCS Level 2 (European Rail Traffic Management System / European Train Control System) for the management, control and protection of traffic; able, among other things, to ensure interoperability on the European high-speed networks. This system has been chosen by European Community as a common technological language for its high-speed networks. We have, in short, the tools and the ability to grow our business, develop quality and efficiency of our services and the role of the train system in a country increasingly integrated with Europe. What is needed, however, is the strong support of our legislators. On the one hand adequate investment in strategic infrastructure and solutions ensuring efficiency, on the other resources in the service, in the form of appropriate fees. And, if you do not want to give direct incentives to train, that is, the form of transportation most ecologically virtuous, at least we should avoid measures that penalize it, making it less and less competitive, such as the incentives given to trucks.

Who is Mauro Moretti Since September 2006, CEO of the Italian State railways Group; President of CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) since January 2009; Vice-President of UIC European Management Committee. Also President of CIFI (College of Italian Railway Engineers) since 2004. In May 2010 the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano appointed him Cavaliere del Lavoro. He graduated in Electrical Engineering at the University of Bologna in 1977 and in the same year, he won the competition for leadership positions in the company of the then Autonomous State Railways. He was only 24 years old.

COMPASS project releases its first newsletter
TTS Italia, has released the first newsletter for the European COMPASS (optimised CO-Modal PASSenger transport for reducing carbon emissions) project, which it is now involved in as a consortium partner. The newsletter is shared jointly with another European project, OPTIMISM (Optimising Passenger Transport Information to Materialize Insights for Sustainable Mobility), and reveals the first results and deliverables achieved by both projects and offers more details on their future objectives. Both projects are funded by the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme and are coordinated by UK academic institutions; COMPASS by the Transport Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University; and OPTIMISM by Coventry University Enterprises. The rationale behind the joint newsletter between COMPASS and OPTIMIS is based on the fact that the two projects show great affinities with each other, as well as sharing common objectives. Both projects propose a set of strategies, recommendations and policy measures, through the scientific analysis of social behavior, mobility patterns and business models, for integrating and optimizing the transport system. This will be based on the modeling and the assessment of the impact of co-modality and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) systems for transport. There is a cluster among some activities of the two projects and some results obtained in OPTMISM will be used in COMPASS, so it was decided to try and share knowledge on common issues.

TTS Italia at Forum 2013: “Sustainable Logistics and Transport. For the environment, companies, mobility, economical and social development” - 28 February/1 March 2013 - Verona
TTS Italia, represented by its Secretary General Olga Landolfi, participated in Forum 2013: “Sustainable Logistics and Transport. For the environment, companies, mobility, economical and social development” held from 28 February to 1 March in Verona. The event has been the occasion to meet for sector operators and institutions representatives. Among TTS Italia members, ACI, founding member, and Iveco, ordinary member, participates as speakers. TTS Italia especially took part in the Workshop of 1° March on “Technological innovation in road transport: vehicles and telematics tools”. The Forum has been organized within the Transpotec Logitec exhibition in which several TTS Italia members took part: Fai Service, Iveco, Magneti Marelli, Telecom Italia, Viasat.

TTS Italia at the Workshop on “E-ticketing – Opportunities for public transport, smart cities and industry”
It was held on 11 February, in Rome the Workshop on “E-ticketing – Opportunities for public transport, smart cities and industry”, organized by Club Italia and Federmobilità. Among participants, TTS Italia, representatives of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, TTS Italia founding member, as well as representatives of the academic Word. The Workshop has been the occasion to discuss the new technical rules on e-ticketing to be issued within 19 March 2013 at national level.

TTS Italia at the Workshop “Smart City and road safety” – 13 March 2013 - Turin
It will take place on March 13 in Turin, the Workshop "Smart City and road safety", organized by the National Observatory of local Road Safety in urban areas ANCIUPI and that, among other speakers, will be attended by the President of TTS Italia, Rossella Panero. The event is part of a program of themed events, in order to foster collaboration between institutional and private actors on the issue of road safety in the city. These events are part of the broader objective of the Observatory to act as an connection of activities related to road safety in urban areas, contributing to the consolidation and dissemination of the culture of road safety, in line with the guidelines set by the European Commission which provide a general framework for initiating concrete actions at national and local levels by 2020.

News of the month

ACI programme for Local Public Transport
On 6 February, ACI, TTS Italia founding member, gave shape to the needs of 34 million Italian drivers into ten proposals. The plan proposed by ACI if implemented would allow a cut of 26.8 billion euro costs for the car, with no impact on the state budget. ACI focuses on cost reduction that the Italians have to endure to keep a car; safety, but also calls for more public transport to reduce car use in cities. ACI proposes the definition of a document for Local Public Transport to regularize rules and resolve the uncertainties of the field as well as a law providing for a system of integrated mobile information at the local level, the establishment of a control room mobility supported by the Authority to guide the choices of transport national and local mobility.

Anas: appalti in digitale
For the first time in Italy, Anas, TTS Italia supporting member, has formalized an massive public procurement agreement in digital form, complying with the new procedures introduced by the recent legislation for law simplification. In fact, thanks to the use of a technology platform, also actions relating to contracts for works of great technical and economic importance can be drawn up by a single digitally signing respectively by the two contracting parties and the notary.

Collaboration between Viasat and CCISS started
Viasat, TTS Italia ordinary member, and CCISS (body of information on the safety and viability of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, TTS Italia founding member) signed a cooperation agreement which provides, on the one hand the supply to the Central CCISS of historical data anonymous (for the years 2010 and 2011) derived from satellite devices by Viasat and the other, the supply by the CCISS of news on traffic that will be distributed through the satellite system on board (data extremely safe because verified by the competent bodies of the police). This is an important partnership aimed at informing and make more safe mobility on Italian roads.

First test in Newcastle for the European project Compass4D
The European project Compass4D has started its first trials in Newcastle, UK. The project started last January and involves, among others, Swarco Mizar and Municipality of Verona respectively TTS Italia founding and ordinary member. The project taking place in Newcastle involves new satellite navigation technology, which helps drivers adjust their speed so they can pass through a series of traffic lights on green. The Compass4D project is being led in the UK by Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council, which are developing a system to reduce city center congestion and pollution associated with stop-start driving. The project will link an in-vehicle communication system directly with the city’s Urban Traffic Management Control (UTMC) center, helping motorists to drive more efficiently to keep traffic moving. Information will be sent directly to drivers to take them away from areas that are becoming congested, speeding up people’s journeys through the city and easing overall congestion. With a total budget of 10 millions Euro, within Compass4D, seven European cities (Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Eindhoven-Helmond, Newcastle, Thessaloniki, Verona and Vigo) will work for improving road safety, increasing energy efficiency and reducing level of congestions for road transport. With this in mind, cities and industrial partners will jointly implement three cooperative services: Forward Collision Warning, Red Light Violation Warning, Energy Efficient Intersection service. These services will be piloted over one year of real life driving in the pilot cities. In total the consortium aims to pilot 334 vehicles with more than 550 users. In addition to proving the benefits, the project will identify deployment opportunities, technical and social barriers and find solutions for those.

MOBiNET project launched
The European Union (EU) has launched a new project to develop an ‘Internet of Mobility’ and simplify the deployment of intelligent transport services across the region. Over the next three and a half years, the EUR15.6 million (US$21.1 million) MOBiNET project plans to capitalize on the widespread growth in smartphones, mobile data services, and cloud-based computing to launch a new generation of travel apps for European citizens, and transport services for businesses and local authorities. The project involves among other partners, Swarco mIzar, TTS Italia founding member, 5t, CRF and Pluservice, TTS Italia ordinary members. The project aims to create a community of transport data and service providers that can link to users through a Europe-wide framework or ‘service platform’. For users, MOBiNET will offer a common interface that will help them find and subscribe to new types of mobile services, such as real-time multimodal travel assistance, parking guidance, booking and payment schemes or Europe-wide virtual tickets for transit services. The MOBiNET service platform will deliver the following features: an online B2B directory of Europe-wide transport data and services; a unified mobile accounting, payment and clearing system, giving users a single account valid throughout Europe; an open business environment enabling providers to integrate third-party services with their own products; a secure environment for in-vehicle and portable devices offering users a dedicated app-store, and service providers access to MOBiNET-compliant user devices; a B2B e-marketplace for the automatic negotiation of service agreements; and a Service Development Kit to simplify the creation of innovative MOBiNET services for end- and business users.

"Students today, citizens tomorrow: lessons of mobility and safety on the road": project started – press release available
It started on January the project "Students today, citizens tomorrow: lessons of mobility and safety on the road" promoted by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, TTS Italia founding member, and the Agency for Mobility of Rome, TTS Italia ordinary member, in collaboration with TTS Italia. The project will involve seven schools in Rome, and the students of the three middle schools for a total of 21 classrooms and over 500 students. The strategy is to focus on training in order to create a generation of responsible citizens and for a new awareness on the issues of urban, sustainable and intelligent mobility, and on the rules for a correct behavior on the road. The education of the new generations, in fact, plays a key role in prevention policies, it is part of the plans promoting active participation. The project encourages young people to reflect on the concepts of Safety, Sustainability, Intelligence and Economy of urban transport which represent the "basic awareness" of all subsequent choices: personal, supportive, institutional. If successful, the project, that includes monitoring and evaluation activities, will be developed in other Italian cities in the next school year.

TomTom launches new device for motorcyclists
TomTom, TTS Italia ordinary member, has introduced a new version of its Rider unit, which is a portable navigation device created especially for motorcyclists. Following feedback from the motorcycling community, the company has designed the new Rider device to give bikers the ability to choose the type of route they want to ride, including options for the fastest, the most scenic or a personalized journey. Bikers can easily create and then upload their personalised routes direct to their TomTom Rider device. By downloading ‘Tyre’ interactive software, motorcyclists can search, create and edit their own routes on a PC, which can then be uploaded to their device. Alternatively, a unique ‘Upload Routes and Go’ feature enables bikers to transfer routes directly to their device and share them with other motorcyclists via Bluetooth. The unit includes a feature that feeds audio instructions directly to the user’s helmet via Bluetooth, which allows riders to fully concentrate on the road ahead. The device also includes the introduction of a new 10.9cm (4.3in) glove-friendly screen, which responds instantly to touch and is designed for riding in any weather conditions, including rain or bright sunlight.

With Politecnico di Torino and 5t, Turin gets ready for Opticities project
The City of Turin has passed the selections and is in the position to become part of the European project "Opticities", to experiment services that integrate data traffic (traffic, restrictions on movement and access to the car) with those of the public transport services, cycling and car pooling. Also 5t and Politecnico di Torino, TTS Italia ordinary members, has worked on the project. The trial, which will take place through a multimodal browser, requires the participation of 150 people who will be given a smartphone and they return the data and feedback on the functioning of the navigator. The added value of the project is to systematize the different sources of data, to ensure quality and timeliness and, where possible, open the data to third parties in the form of "open web services". The budget for the project is 1 million Euro, about 835 000 of them funded by the European Community. Opticities aims to support European cities in dealing with the mobility of people and goods with a focus on intermodality and forms of transportation alternatives to the use car such as public transport, cycling, car pooling and provides the development of partnerships between the public and private sectors and testing of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Opticities consortium consists of 23 partners from 8 EU countries: includes 6 cities (Grand Lyon, Madrid, London, Birmingham, Wroclaw and Gothenburg) and operators in the world of research, management information systems, public transport and the automotive industry.

The next March 11 will be held in Turin the Workshop "ITS - Technologies, methods and applications in road transport", organized by the Politecnico di Torino, TTS Italia ordinary member, with the support of TTS Italia, as well as the network of university for training Ion TS and publisher of the new book on the theme of the workshop, which will be presented. The workshop will be attended by the President of TTS Italia, Rossella Panero, the Secretary General, Olga Landolfi and by several TTS Italia members from the world of research, training and innovation. The aim of the event is to outline the evolutionary scenarios of the training and research related to ITS. For the programme, click here. The workshop will also be an opportunity to award prizes for competition for the best scientific and technical work on "ITS" subject to the notice of the Politecnico di Torino with the support of TTS Italia. The call for ideas competition consists of 10 prizes of 500 Euro each, for those who submit the best work in ITS, with respect to the integration and application of electronic technologies, information, and telecommunications systems of road, rail, multimodal and its components, for purposes of greater safety, energy efficiency and transport, quality of movement, reduction of environmental impacts.

People-oriented development: customized assignment of rosters through IVU.crew APD

The assignment of daily shifts staff is a real challenge for those involved in the operational management of urban and suburban public transport. We are faced with many questions, among which is very important to understand if the scheduling of services is optimized so as to suit the preferences of the driver, legal regulations and internal regulations of the company by considering all economic aspects.
