The point of Morena Pivetti

PNRR, the key role of transport and logistics.
Panero: “TTS Italia proposals accepted”

There is no one who disagrees. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) will be Italy's recovery plan, an epochal opportunity that refers to the Marshall Plan and the post-war reconstruction, to the years that made people shout about the Italian "miracle" and the "Dolce vita" that bewitched the world. It will be the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that the Covid 19 pandemic tragedy leaves as a positive legacy to recover the delays, bureaucratic excesses and inefficiencies that weigh down our economy and restart the extraordinary energies of the country.
If these are the declared ambitions of the Plan delivered in Brussels at the end of April by the Government led by Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the good news is that the digitalization of transport and logistics, the mobility of people and the handling of goods play a prominent role, as the Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility (MIMS), Enrico Giovannini, underlined. “MIMS assumes a central role in the implementation of the PNRR. We have the opportunity to design a sustainable and resilient country with a medium-long term vision - he commented -. It is only the beginning of a process that involves unprecedented investments in the construction and upgrading of infrastructure, for sustainable mobility, to strengthen businesses and improve the quality of life and people, protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems.”
Satisfaction shared by numerous associations in the sector, which have seen many of their proposals accepted. First of all TTS Italia which found in the pages of the Plan many of the ideas it had supported, even in parliamentary hearings: from smart logistics to the simplification of procedures, the dematerialization of documents, data sharing, the one-stop customs office and the creation of National Logistics Platform, to Mobility as a Service for the movement of citizens and shared mobility, up to smart roads capable of communicating with vehicles and the use of alternative and renewable power supplies with the construction of the electrical infrastructure, and research and experimentation in the use of hydrogen.
It is "with satisfaction", in fact, that "TTS Italia has seen many of the key issues and concepts proposed by us welcomed in the version of the PNRR sent to Brussels - claims President Rossella Panero - especially with regard to MaaS and digitalization of logistics. We consider it an important milestone for the sector”. “The National Recovery and Resilience Plan - she concludes - is an opportunity not to be missed. Thanks to the conscious and targeted use of the technology already available, we can make an epochal leap forward”.
The numbers speak louder than words, those of the total resources entrusted to the management of the MIMS, and the sectoral ones assigned specifically to transport and logistics. Of the total 248 billion of the Plan - to the 191.5 billion of the Next Generation Eu are added the 30.6 billion of the complementary national plan, the 26 billion for specific works and additional resources for 15.4 billion - 62 billion will go to interventions on sustainable infrastructures, mobility and logistics, with an increase of 47 billion compared to the resources envisaged under current legislation, of which 14 billion more than the previous government's draft.
The Ministry's projects are financed for 41 billion by the European resources of the Next Generation EU and the EU React, in addition to 10.6 billion by the complementary fund and 10.3 billion by the budget gap, with 56% of resources, equal to 34.7 billion is intended for interventions in the South. The lion's share goes to the so-called "iron care": 25 billion investments are planned for the development of high-speed / high-capacity railway lines, while 5.45 billion go to the strengthening of regional networks and electrification and improvement of connections with ports and airports.
More specifically, investments for digitalization interventions in the various sectors headed by MIMS amount to 4.8 billion. The first 41.5 million was allocated to local public transport to encourage the development of the Mobility as a Service model and the integrated use of the various modes, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Innovation. The budget for the adaptation of the vehicle fleet is much richer: 8.4 billion that will be used to renew the fleets of buses, trams and regional trains and to adapt them technologically and to increase the infrastructures of rapid mass transport.
The Plan allocates 250 million euros to the digitalization of the national logistics system. The overall project is divided into 3 macro activities: 1) the LogIn Center, that is the creation of a control room under the aegis of the National Logistics Platform, is worth 30 million euros; 2) the development and homogenization of the IT systems of the network of national ports and interports count on 45 million; 3) the LogIn Business, which aims to increase the digital equipment and the use of technologies of national freight and logistics companies to encourage both the computerized dialogue with public bodies and the adoption of planning and programming systems of loads and planning wheels amounts to 175 million.
For the ecological transition of logistics, interventions for an additional 1.4 billion have been planned, which include the construction of the electricity infrastructure and charging stations for vehicles. Finally, a really conspicuous post, as Goldman Sachs pointed out in its Global Economics Comment considering it one of the important "focuses" of the Italian Plan, insists on projects that will finance the use of hydrogen, 3.2 billion which include the experimentation of hydrogen trains in Val Camonica.
The baton now passes to the PNRR Committee, created by Minister Giovannini to ensure timely implementation of the Plan and to monitor every phase of project implementation, to assess the effects on employment, in particular for young people and women, on the reduction of socio-economic inequalities and on the environment. And to the Council for Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility Policies, established in the spirit of social partnership and made up of trade union and business organizations, environmental associations and civil society networks to accompany concrete implementation with indications, suggestions and proposals. Good Plan everyone!

FOCUS ON...

MaaS, a new concept of mobility capable of responding in a personalized way to the specific needs of the user, is entering our lives, but it is still necessary to work towards a unified vision at national level.
On 13 and 14 July, in Rome, Club Italia and TTS Italia organize the "National MaaS Days" to present the results of the Working Groups of the two Associations: "The Guidelines for the development of MaaS services in Italy" elaborated by TTS Italia, and "Payment and access systems for MaaS. Guidelines for collective transport" by Club Italia.
More information will follow.
The event will take place in compliance with current health safety regulations.

Logistics, Freight Leaders Council and TTS Italia together for digital transformation

Freight Leaders Council and TTS Italia have signed a memorandum of understanding thus giving way to a long-term collaboration in the area of digital transformation of logistics. The agreement aims to support the dissemination of the culture of innovation in the sector through the sharing of good practices, the promotion of pilot projects for the use of ITS systems in logistics, the presentation of operational solutions to the PA for the simplification of procedures and processes control / monitoring, the organization of common working groups on specific areas of the Supply Chain.
For the President of TTS Italia, Rossella Panero: "Although logistics and technology are in fact increasingly integrated, in the past this lack of link has led to inefficiencies that currently cost the country about 70 billion euros every year, of which 30 due to lack of simplification and digitization of processes. The technology is already widely available. Now, thanks to the PNRR, we also have the regulatory tools and the financial resources to use it. It is up to us as associations to activate educational and cultural paths to achieve a true digital revolution in logistics. By joining forces and ideas, the Freight Leaders Council and TTS Italia will be able to achieve important results in this direction.
" “The combination of digital transformation and innovation is now the PNRR must - declared the President of the Freight Leaders Council, Massimo Marciani -. We are happy that logistics have been given a central role in our economy and no longer subsidiary, as it has been for years. Moving from muscle logistics to digital logistics is the most precious gift we can give to future generations, in terms of quality employment and high value-added services. In this process, the continuous exchange and continuous contamination of ideas with TTS Italia will be our strength.”

TWO QUESTIONS TO

Fabio Saiu – Director Geotab Italia and Leasing & Renting, Geotab Europe

Electric vehicles are playing an increasingly important role in Italy as well as in Europe: in January 2021 Unrae data reported that hybrid and electric vehicle registrations in Italy had grown by 80% compared to January 2020. How does Geotab support the transition and management of sustainable fleets?

The world is rapidly switching to electric vehicles for both environmental and economic reasons, thanks also to government incentives: companies are realising that the transition to electric vehicles involves not only cost savings (the total cost of ownership is cheaper), but also a competitive advantage that will be consolidated over time, and so they are increasingly adopting telematic solutions to facilitate the transition.
Geotab supports the largest number of EV/hybrid makes and models (over 160) in the telematics industry, and with our EV platform and tools such as the Battery Degradation Tool, Temperature Tool for EV Range and EV Suitability Assessment (EVSA), we help fleet managers at all stages, with the support and professionalism of our Business Partner ecosystem: from transition to management and optimisation of electric vehicle fleets.

In the wake of the great revolution in purchasing behaviour due to the pandemic, with the boom of online shopping, the process towards a new model of optimised mobility has accelerated: what is Geotab's added value in this context?

Geotab has a unique telematics platform with unlimited customisation possibilities, suitable for all types of fleets and vehicles, and helping to maximise driver safety, comply with relevant legislation and reduce costs in an environment that is constantly changing.
Considering transport and logistics, our customers use our solution for a variety of purposes, including verification of vehicle hygiene through Geotab Drive, optimisation of predictive maintenance programmes and risk reduction using Geotab's Big Data, automated downloading of tachograph data, identification of risky driving and driver training, dynamic routing but also the ability to assess the cost-effectiveness of adopting electric vehicles for the fleet with Geotab's assessment tools.
In general, the aim is to help create a safer and more cost-efficient fleet, leading to better logistics and therefore customer satisfaction.

New AEP publications: AEP solutions for Turin public transport and multisuppliers Systems
AEP, TTS Italia ordinary member, dedicates a new publication to the electronic ticketing system created for the Torinese Trasporti Group (GTT) and the City of Turin. The system is based on AFCS, a general software platform, complete with applications, data structures, user interfaces, security and communication mechanisms, designed to be customized according to the architecture provided for each project where it is used. AFCS represents an important evolution of SBME, the AEP system previously created for the management of ticketing of local public transport in the urban and interurban area of Milan.
To read the new publication, go to the AEP website: https://www.aep-italia.it/pubblicazioni//.
AEP has also prepared a small monograph presenting the VTS technology, developed by AEP and intended to facilitate the integration of different systems, especially in the MaaS field, but not only. In today's world it is increasingly difficult to think that a single company can excel in any field. It is therefore evident that it is in the Company's interest to be able to choose the solutions that best suit its needs, selecting them from all those on the market. This becomes even more important in the construction of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) systems, where no MaaS Operator can enter into the merits of each specific local ticketing system.

Program chooses Viasat and its Buddy anti-abandonment device: safety for adults and children
Program Autonoleggio and Viasat S.p.A., TTS Italia ordinary member, strengthened the relationship of mutual collaboration and trust established for many years, starting a new important partnership in the safety area. The aim is to promote the Buddy by Viasat device to prevent children from being left in the car. A phenomenon that, over the years, has made many victims among children, falling into despair entire families destroyed by the pain of an involuntary distraction. The facts always follow the same tragic sequence, with a parent forgetting their child in the car. A tragedy that is so often in the national news, amplified by social networks. There is also a scientific explanation called dissociative amnesia, a memory lapse, most often caused by stress or hurry. DM122/2019, Regulations implementing Article 172 of the New Road Traffic Code, therefore introduced the obligation to install devices to prevent the abandoning of children under the age of 4 in closed vehicles. Buddy by Viasat complies perfectly with the law. It is the anti abandonment pillow equipped with a Bluetooth device that detects the presence of the child in the car, alerting through acoustic signals on the app of the parent's smartphone, in case of removal, and also automatically sending an alarm to the Viasat H24 Operations Centre with the GPS coordinates of the car's position. If the parent or the other programmed contacts do not respond, the operator at the Centre will take charge of the alarm and manage the emergency, activating the emergency services to promptly attend to the scene. Buddy by Viasat is a universal, simple, economic and vehicleindependent device, compatible with all child seats and all cars. “From the beginning we believed in the Viasat Buddy project and decided to be actively involved in its promotion. Program has been investing in safety of its drivers for years and when we talk about prevention of risks and dangers, we don't only think about the safety of drivers, but also about the protection of passengers, especially children. Nowadays, in addition to spending a lot of time in the car, we live in a world that runs too fast and we ourselves are subjected to high levels of stress. For this reason, being supported as parents by Buddy's technology becomes indispensable. What convinced Program to join the project was Buddy's ability to contact the Viasat Operations Centre, an aspect that differentiates it from other devices," says Gian Marco Pucci, Program Marketing Office. "Buddy by Viasat -says Valerio Gridelli, Chief BU Smart Connect of Viasat Group - is a real guardian angel for parents and children. It doesn't replace adult supervision, but helps and supports them in their control, thanks to the most advanced technology, connectivity and integration, combined with the attention of the operators of our H24 Operations Centre who manage alarms of abandon potential danger. We are very proud that Program, which has always been focused on security issues, has chosen us as its technological partner."

Targa Telematics, tech company that develops advanced digital platforms in smart mobility, and TTS Italia founding member, has been mentioned in the latest IoT analytics company, Berg Insight, report among the major IoT platform providers of carsharing services.
According to Berg Insight, notwithstanding the global pandemic, in 2020 carsharing services have grown by 10% and will continue to grow steadily in the next five years. The company estimates that by 2025, carsharing services will count for 971.000 vehicles (+16% yearly), involving 190,3 million people (with a yearly growth of +21,5%).
The services that carsharing companies have introduced in the last months, most of which complying with the latest user mobility requirements - such as the need for proximity tourism (such as longer domestic holiday rentals) or taking the car instead of public transportation or taxis - have seen the strategic role of telematics platform providers growing that, thanks to their innovations, allow the management of new services.
Targa Telematics entered the carsharing market in 2014, presenting its platform particularly to companies, councils and renters who want to implement shared mobility solutions to optimize their car fleet mobility, improve viability on their territory and reduce CO2 emissions. The following year, Targa Telematics introduced keyless technology to enable digital renting solutions and, in 2018, peer-to-peer carsharing.
Roberto Bordin, Smart Mobility Product Owner of Targa Telematics, commented: “Targa Telematics approach to smart mobility is not limited to car management, but it is extended to every type of vehicle, with specific modules for electric ones. Additionally, we provide consultancy that helps mobility operators identify the best conditions to successfully implement smart mobility services”.
From a technological perspective, Targa Telematics offers mobility operators solutions for users, car fleet management and for monitoring their performance. The solution includes, other than the platform, web and mobile applications for booking and the use of service for the end users.
Additionally, Targa Telematics offers a 24/7 call center to support end users.
Targa Telematics carsharing solutions can be quickly applied to several cases. In corporate mobility, for the company car fleet management; in public service, for the local entities who want to offer a valid alternative to public transportation; for the short-term rental mobility operators, by adopting key-less solutions that reduce waiting times and long-term renting with peer-to-peer solutions for their clients.
Roberto Bordin commented: “The speed of implementation and the profitability enabled by the most suitable mobility platform become a crucial asset to compete and win on the market of these new services offered to customers, always in rapid evolution”.
Thanks to its great experience, Targa Telematics supports customers in the current digital transformation to enter new mobility markets or to enhance their presence with increasingly competitive offers.

The top management of RFI and ANAS in comparison on "The mobility of the future"
A more connected, green and competitive Italy thanks to sustainable, resilient, accessible and inclusive mobility infrastructures. This is the goal of the FS Italiane Group and Anas, TTS Italia ordinary member, who discussed the issue during a webinar, to contribute to the relaunch of the country and to a green and digital transition of mobility. The interventions revealed the commitment of the entire FS Group in tracing a strategic long-term sustainability path, aiming to become carbon neutral by 2050 and increasing the modal shift in favor of collective and shared mobility and rail freight transport.
After all, transport is a sector that plays an essential role and is undergoing a profound evolution in the name of sustainability. In the current scenario, we no longer look only at the market but at the survival of the planet, and time becomes an essential factor in guiding the path towards objectives whose realization can no longer be postponed. The hope that emerged from the meeting, and everyone's commitment, is aimed at ensuring that the process of simplifying the procedures for authorizing and entrusting new infrastructures, on which the Government is working, and the stringent timing imposed by Europe on the works envisaged in the PNRR, contribute to accelerating the virtuous path towards a truly sustainable future and true integration between territories, thanks to effective, efficient, accessible transport systems with a reduced environmental impact.

Tiemme: the new habits of users who choose smart, innovative and safe methods
The pandemic has digitized the purchasing habits of Tiemme users, TTS Italia ordinary member, who are increasingly inclined to choose innovative, smart and safe methods. In fact, in the year of Covid-19, Tiemme has indeed recorded a sharp decline in passengers on board its buses throughout the territory (on average minus 60% over the entire area of competence), but also consolidated the relationship between passengers and dematerialized payment tools, such as the online store on the tiemmespa.it website or on the Tiemme Mobile 2.0 App and, in particular, with Pay and Go, the innovative project that allows the purchase on board of city buses with contactless bank cards. The Pay and Go service, introduced in different phases on the Tiemme urban fleet starting from 2018, has recorded strong growth and loyalty extremely lively and continuous, despite the closures and the difficulty in accessing the validators imposed by the safety regulations linked to the pandemic.
The analysis of the data collected in 2020 highlights the peak of + 75% recorded in Siena in terms of purchase flows, with about 20% of passengers choosing this system as their second preferred purchasing method, after the traditional paper one. The trend recorded in Grosseto is also very good, with a growth of just under 70% and in Arezzo, where the service only arrived in December 2019 but quickly spread to users. This is due not only to the ease of use of the service and the economic convenience of using the contactless bank card (no additional cost is applied to the transaction), but also to the complete security that the method offers. An initiative, moreover, which was then strongly in tune with the health needs that emerged in an increasingly felt way in the last period.
2020 was also characterized by the increasingly widespread choice by users of online purchases, via App or e-commerce portal, who recorded a much more contained decrease than what happened for all other types of purchase of securities. of travel. In particular, the free Tiemme App (Tiemme Mobile 2.0, which allows access to all services on the go and via smartphone or tablet) recorded approximately 25,000 downloads by users in 2020.
In addition to the sharp decline in passengers on board buses, the data analyzed must take into account the strong impact that the refreshments of unused passes had in 2020 due to the Covid containment measures. In total, about 18,500 refreshments were provided in 2020, of which 10,800 vouchers and 7,700 extensions of the validity of the season ticket.
In line with the increasingly smart profile of its customers, in 2020 Tiemme also strengthened its social communication activity, closely linked to the information flows guaranteed through the tiemmespa.it site, especially in ensuring constant updates regarding the various provisions. gradually adopted for the containment of the pandemic for the benefit of the users more directly involved such as the school one. To the channels already active on Facebook and Instagram, You Tube and Linkedin have also been added for a communication capable of reaching the various digital user targets.

Turin likes Aep Ticketing Solutions' contactless EMV solution
In the last nine months 400,000 single tickets have been purchased in Turin, in contactless EMV mode, ie with bank cards used directly on board the bus and in the Metro, using the system provided by Aep Ticketing Solutions, TTS Italia ordinary member. The number of people who have relied on this new payment method is constantly growing: despite Covid and the consequent decrease in passengers, today 7% of purchases are made with contactless mode. The result is due to the simplicity and speed of use of the contactless EMV service, to the possibility of avoiding queuing at the ticket office together with the guaranteed security in the transaction. The numbers were presented by Aep Ticketing Solutions, leader in electronic ticketing, during the the "Next Generation Mobility" national event.
The contactless EMV system has been active from 10 July to today on Metro and five GTT surface lines and accepts bank cards from the Mastercard, Visa and American Express circuits. The purchase is also possible via virtualized card on a smartphone or smartwach device. Purchasing the ticket with the payment card is simple and intuitive for the customer: the card is brought up to the validator who immediately confirms the operation and, on the subway, unlocks the access gate. The charge is made directly to the current account on which the card used is placed and the customer has the possibility through a dedicated website to check the status of the trips made (gtt.easyticketing.it/cards). Checks by GTT customer assistants take place in respect of privacy: the passenger is required to communicate only the last 4 digits of the card to allow confirmation of the payment via the terminal provided to the staff.
“Turin is an example of smart mobility, aligned with European standards. Its citizens are becoming more and more accustomed to the use of innovative payment instruments - comments Giovanni Becattini, CEO of Aep Ticketing Solutions -. These tools have among the objectives a better usability of the public transport service and a greater efficiency of the Company. With over 7,000 on-board equipment and 2,000 outlets, Gtt's is one of the largest and most important systems for Aep, so much so that it required the development of adequate tools for remote supervision and management”.
But the news does not end here. "We have filed a patent application for a new type of radio-optical validation called Optius, based on the combined use of the optical reading of a dynamically variable QR-code and Bluetooth LE (Android and iOS). This novelty - concludes Becattini - will be tested with GTT in Turin ”.
