PON Metro A HALF ROUTE: HERE ARE THE PROJECTS OF THE METROPOLITAN CITIES

A FIRST OVERVIEW IN A TTS ITALIA CONFERENCE IN FLORENCE ON 20 AND 21 JUNE

The PON Metro, the national operational program "Città Metropolitane 2014 - 2020", adopted by the European Commission in July 2015, has reached the middle of its path. Among the cities ahead with the works, Turin, Genoa, Milan, Bologna, Venice, Florence and Rome. With less developed projects in Bari, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Catania, Messina and Palermo. In transition, Cagliari.
This is what emerges by consulting the site www.ponmetro.it managed by the Territorial Cohesion Authority, which is also the owner of the entire program. A balance that anticipates what will be done during the conference "ITS & PON Metro 2014-2020: present and future of metropolitan cities", organized by TTS Italia in collaboration with the Territorial Cohesion Agency, which will take place on 20 and 21 June in Florence (for more details on the conference, click here).
The Program, which can count on a financial allocation of over 892 million euros, of which 588 million European resources (about 90 million for each city in the South and 40 million for Center-North and Sardinia), aims to align the Italian cities with the objectives and strategies proposed by the European Urban Agenda that identifies the key areas in metropolitan areas to meet the challenges of smart, inclusive and sustainable growth. It involves 14 Italian cities following two drivers of project development: application of the "Smart city" paradigm for the redesigning and modernization of urban services; and the promotion of social inclusion practices and projects for the population segments and the districts which present the most difficult conditions.

What are the involved cities doing?

Turin. It focuses on the principles of the smart city to promote the reduction of energy consumption, improving the services of the PA through the introduction of ICT technologies, increasing accessibility and social inclusion with action strategies aimed at intervening in areas of strong marginality. Funding for the evolution of the Traffic Lights and Traffic Control Unit with priority to public transport, smarts roads and innovative sensors.

Genoa. The operational plan does not concern large structural works, but intends to strengthen the role of the city as a "catalyst" of energies, given the concentration of inhabitants compared to the rest of the territory (the population is 851,283 inhabitants, of which 69% resident in Genoa), but without losing sight of the inhabited territory made more efficient in services. It is worth mentioning the diffusion in the metropolitan city of IT platforms to provide digital services to citizens and administrations.

Milan. The operational plan envisages the development of thirteen projects consistent with a vision of participatory urban regeneration characterized by aspects of social and economic revitalization and by the environmental requalification of the metropolitan context. The projects are concentrated in some neighborhoods characterized by the presence of public housing. The establishment of an area for shared and sustainable mobility should be noted.

Bologna. The city aims to tackle central issues for territorial development and cohesion through models of social innovation based on the valorisation of common goods and collaboration between citizens, associations and public administration. The projects are developed in accordance with the path of the urban innovation plan 'Collaborare è Bologna' starting from October 2015 and May 2016 with the involvement of six districts and over 1200 citizens. Of note, the development of "active" pedestrian and cycle mobility.

Venice. The strategy underlying the city's operational plan envisages the idea of a tendential development centered on a plural, supportive and sustainable metropolitan city dimension in which a direct and active participation of citizens is expected. Among the priority objectives is the improvement of mobility for residents and city users, and support for the weaker fringes of citizenship through the activation of inclusive services. It is worth mentioning the financing in favor of the evolution of the traffic control and traffic light control with priority to the public transport, smarts roads and innovative sensors.

Florence. The operating plan envisages projects aimed at improving network infrastructures and services with direct repercussions on all city users. Maximum priority is given to the use and reuse of existing functional and intangible material resources available to the community. Through the constitution of a design network it is intended to stimulate the concept of co-design applied to urban planning, consisting in the aggregation of citizen stakeholders within the process of defining services for the city. Of note, the financing of info-telematic systems for the control and management of public and private traffic on the urban network.

Rome. The projects are consistent with the objectives of the Rome Capital strategic plan which concerns two complementary aspects: civil growth and sustainable development of the city. With the support of the PON Metro, the City intends to increase the level of quality of life of citizens through interventions of reconversion and urban regeneration that also provide the proactive involvement of the municipalities of the metropolitan belt. It is worth noting the financing of multimodal hubs and info-mobility services.

Bari. The operational plan envisages the strengthening of the offer of digital services for access to public administrations through the development of platforms; improving the provision of services to the citizen in terms of efficiency and effectiveness; a strong impulse for the renewal and efficiency of public services related to collective transport and mobility services (bike sharing, car sharing) and finally, attention to issues related to social cohesion and the protection of the weakest. Of note, the financing of a city logistics project and the renewal of the Local Public Transport fleet.

Naples. The operational plan includes 31 projects that pursue the objective not only of increasing services for the citizen but intend to be consistent with a logic of social planning capable of generating an overall improvement in the conditions of the population. The integration of policies, resources and intervention strategies defines an action plan for the city that intends to act on prevention and development and not exclusively on the emergency. It is worth mentioning the financing of infrastructures and smart technologies for the management of tunnel traffic flows and traffic lights.

Reggio Calabria. The projects included in the Operative Plan contribute to the consolidation of positive and sustainable development models oriented to the social and cultural growth of the community. In the phase of drawing up the Plan, the administration started a process of involvement not only of institutional actors but also of active economic and social subjects. Of note, the financing of the ITS platform and mobility control center.

Catania. The city intends to improve the conditions of access to real and digital services, enhancing existing ones and activating new ones. Priority needs are focused on increasing the offer of sustainable mobility, on energy efficiency and inclusion as a contrast to the economic crisis and situations of social hardship. Of note, the renewal of the Local Public Transport fleet and a bike sharing service.

Messina. The projects take into account three key words: innovation, ecology and solidarity. The projects will contribute to implement a simple and immediate interaction with the public administration, an efficient urban and extra-urban transport system, a new concept of building according to energy efficiency criteria and a model of community welfare that addresses the emergency and overcomes the welfarism. Of note, the financing of the intermodal connection system of the historic port - railway station - parking lots of interchange - public transport and infomobility projects.

Palermo. The objective of the plan is to lead the city and the territory of the metropolitan belt towards organic development in the thematic areas of sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and social inclusion. The plan aims at the pursuit of an integrated smart city optics with the reduction of energy consumption and the strengthening of urban safety levels. It is worth mentioning the financing of City Compass, a platform for managing and tracking in real time the bus fleet and the integrated system serving the citizen for the forecast of the arrival of public transport.

Cagliari. The plan focuses on meeting the needs of citizens in terms of social hardship, access to digital public services and mobility. The projects pursue a logic of increasing citizen participation in community development both with direct activity and with increasing awareness of the importance of virtuous behavior such as in terms of slow mobility, social innovation, smart city. Of note, the financing of many cycle paths and a bike sharing service.

Europe on the Move: Commission completes its agenda for safe, clean and connected mobility

In his State of the Union address of September 2017, President Juncker set out a goal for the EU and its industries to become a world leader in innovation, digitisation and decarbonisation. Building on the previous 'Europe on the Move' of May and November 2017, the Juncker Commission put forward on 17 May a third and final set of measures to make this a reality in the mobility sector. The objective is to allow all Europeans to benefit from safer traffic, less polluting vehicles and more advanced technological solutions, while supporting the competitiveness of the EU industry. To this end, today's initiatives include an integrated policy for the future of road safety with measures for vehicles and infrastructure safety; the first ever CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles; a strategic Action Plan for the development and manufacturing of batteries in Europe and a forward-looking strategy on connected and automated mobility. With this third 'Europe on the Move', the Commission is completing its ambitious agenda for the modernisation of mobility.
With these last initiatives, the Commission aims to ensure a smooth transition towards a mobility system which is safe, clean and connected & automated. Through these measures, the Commission is also shaping an environment allowing EU companies to manufacture the best, cleanest and most competitive products.
 
Safe mobility
While road fatalities have more than halved since 2001, 25,300 people still lost their lives on EU roads in 2017 and another 135,000 were seriously injured. The Commission is therefore taking measures with strong EU added-value to contribute to safe roads and to a Europe that protects. The Commission is proposing that new models of vehicles are equipped with advanced safety features, such as advanced emergency braking, lane-keeping assist system or pedestrian and cyclists' detection systems for trucks (see full list here). In addition, the Commission is helping Member States to systematically identify dangerous road sections and to better target investment. These two measures could save up to 10,500 lives and avoid close to 60,000 injuries over 2020-2030, thereby contributing to the EU's long-term goal of moving close to zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2050 ("Vision Zero").
 
Clean Mobility
The Commission is completing its agenda for a low-emission mobility system by putting forward the first ever CO2 emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles. In 2025, average CO2 emissions from new trucks will have to be 15% lower than in 2019. For 2030, an indicative reduction target of at least 30% compared to 2019 is proposed. These targets are consistent with the EU's commitments under the Paris Agreement and will allow transport companies – mostly SMEs – to make significant savings thanks to lower fuel consumption (€25,000 over five years). To allow for further CO2 reductions, the Commission is making it easier to design more aerodynamic trucks and is improving labelling for tyres. In addition, the Commission is putting forward a comprehensive action plan for batteries that will help create a competitive and sustainable battery "ecosystem" in Europe.
 
Connected & Automated Mobility
Cars and other vehicles are increasingly equipped with driver assistance systems, and fully autonomous vehicles are just around the corner. Today, the Commission is proposing a strategy aiming to make Europe a world leader for fully automated and connected mobility systems. The strategy looks at a new level of cooperation between road users, which could potentially bring enormous benefits for the mobility system as a whole. Transport will be safer, cleaner, cheaper and more accessible to the elderly and to people with reduced mobility. In addition, the Commission is proposing to establish a fully digital environment for information exchange in freight transport. This will cut red tape and facilitate digital information flows for logistic operations.

How did QMap form and how has the company evolved? We asked QMap Director Mauro Nesti
“QMap, is a geolocation-based software development company for the ITS sector, dedicated to the transformation of data which allows the process of value creation of companies.
The original idea, one which we still believe in, is the opportunity to work in a reality that incorporates the widest sector competencies and follows a company logic based on harmony amongst individuals and shared responsibilities.

Our ability to collect, analyze and process GPS data, transform it into information and its precise positioning on cartography, allowed the company’s growth and strategic partnerships with major players, most of all, Gruppo Atlantia’s Infoblu. A strong and durable collaboration, that includes the important work with the The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, that developed over time.

What this today QMap’s approach to the ITS market?
“QMap works with a variety of client types, both in the public and private sectors; among these we can cite: Autovie Venete, Astral for Lazio Region, Lombardy Region, HP, Octo Telematics.
We offer personalized ITS solutions to all our clients, tailored around their specific needs. With this vision, for example, we have made our products available via the exclusive QubeMap Platform, through a number of different access modalities: API, On Premises or software license agreement. Our products range from those created specifically for Intelligent Transport Systems, for example for the analysis and elaboration of context information, to those for Big Data management.

Can you tell us everything we should know about QMap latest product?

The latest in-house product from QMap is the Vectorial MapServer called VectoGeo. This soon to be launched product is based on worldwide mapping and therefore highly anticipated.

VectoGeo

VectoGeo is the result of several years of investments, in the development of cartographic representation. Today, our Vectorial MapServer represents the Italian alternative to products offered by large sector players.
Among the advantages of this choice: the transparency of actual costs and a superior system for data protection.
Indeed, in On-Premises mode, VectoGeo is delivered directly to the client’s environment. This avoids facing unexpected future charges for later functionalities. Furthermore, the management of data remains in the client’s total control. This demonstrates how data usage is consistent the new GDPR European data protection and privacy law.

From a technical point of view, VectoGeo differs from traditional MapServers as it offers the following options:
• Total disengagement from the "server-side design" logic, achieving a superior personalization of the “client-side cartographic representation”;
• A quicker use of the maps
• The use of outstanding zooming system, without losing image quality (extremely useful in the context of work force management)

The product has an enormous potential, because it allows the representation of any data set on cartography and ultimately the elaboration of information useful for mobility and generally “smart road” and “smart city”. QMap has also created the VectoGeo’s SDK (software development kit), to ensure that it can be easily integrated in any aps and be used on mobile devices.

The geospatial dimension of big data with use of QMap’s MapServer, is becoming understood and accessible to all - concludes Mauro Nesti - this makes the product more intuitive, allowing anybody to really connect with their personal location and environment. Our next challenge is to launch QMap’s “smart representation of information” internationally.

AlmavivA acquires Sadel and completes its range of products

AlmavivA, TTS Italia ordinary member, has acquired 84.05% of the capital of Sadel S.p.A., its long-standing partner in on-board train technology. The partnership has so far resulted in the production of over 20,000 pieces of equipment which are currently installed and operational throughout most of the national fleet and on overseas vehicles.
“This acquisition has allowed AlmavivA to consolidate its offering in the sector, completing the value chain and thereby offering end-to-end solutions with full control of the entire process,” comments Smeraldo Fiorentini, General Manager of AlmavivA’s Transportation & Logistics Division. Now, in fact, every step is overseen by companies within the Group, from the preliminary design of products and systems to prototyping, manufacturing, delivery and finally the provision of assistance and maintenance services. The AlmavivA Transportation range, which already covered Software and related services (content management, post-sales assistance, monitoring, etc.) is therefore now complete.
The acquisition of Sadel is intended not only to consolidate the process, but also to develop the range of products offered in new markets, both in the context of local public transport and in reference to new geographical areas, thereby reinforcing the Group’s projection on the international stage.
AlmavivA’s expertise in on-board systems covers solutions for on-ground - on-board telecommunication and automatic passenger information (audio, video, personal devices), plus solutions for on-board networking (wired and wireless), video surveillance, passenger counting and remote diagnostics. Anas: in Catania the mobility of the future with the Innovation Days

The future of sustainable mobility is the leitmotif of the Innovation Days that Anas (FS Italiane Group), a supporting member of TTS Italia, inaugurated in Catania on May 16th, bringing together for two days companies, institutions and experts of national and international relevance in the transport, logistics and technology sectors.
The Innovation days especially focused on: information technology, as one of the main driver for the development of the integrated, collective, shared and sustainable mobility in the urban and metropolitan areas of Italy; the “Autostrada del Mediterraneo”, the first Italian smart road. The smart road has among its major strengths the union and integration of communication, control and monitoring systems, info-mobility, an interdisciplinary and multi-technological innovative approach, which transforms the road infrastructure into a real digital infrastructure. Innovation that is synonymous with sustainable development and economic development of the country.

Anas: Smart mobility Cortina 2021 for the World Ski Championships
Anas, TTS Italia supporting member, has announced the extraordinary plan to upgrade the road network in view of the World Ski Championships in Cortina in 2021.
The Smart mobility project Cortina 2021 will provide intelligent traffic control and management systems integrated with the Anas smart road technology for monitoring the infrastructure and environmental conditions, will give a fundamental support to the improvement of the movements along the Valley from and to Curtain.
Allowing connectivity to people, vehicles, objects and infrastructures, with the aim of making travel more secure, comfortable and informed, by means of both Wired and Wireless systems of different types.
The total investment amounts to 242 million euros.

In Rome the ESRI Italia Conference

On May 16th and 17th, in Rome, the the Esri Italia Conference, the most articulate and complete national event in the field of geospatial technologies, Geolocation and Geomatics, was held, organized by ESRI Italia, TTS Italia ordinary member. Every year, the conference involves about two thousand people and offers a unique opportunity to meet the latest developments in technology and the possibilities to obtain benefits for their business. Dozens of technological workshops, special events, parallel sessions, training initiatives and project presentations offered a wide and complete overview of new technological trends, such as IOT, Big Data, Location Analytics, Drones, App.
The central theme of the plenary session was the exploration of a model of Company 5.0 that, after the affirmation of the concept of Industry 4.0, wants to support a Smart Society, where digital transformation represents a vehicle to promote the quality of life, through the domotics, smart cities, smart agriculture, cybersecurity, technological innovation in healthcare, focusing attention on human needs.
Novelty of the 2018 edition of the Conference, the GEOsmartcampus Innovation Forum, an initiative that was created to promote the development of innovative solutions to create a Smart Society. The event, organized by GEOsmartcampus, was a moment of deepening and exchange of knowledge on the most important innovation trends dedicated to managers, professionals, start-ups and talents of Italian and foreign companies. 
The Esri Italia Conference was also an opportunity to discover and explore all the news of Esri technology. In a series of dedicated events, the experts of Esri Italia showed, through Demo live, all the most interesting innovations and functionalities of the ArcGIS platform. In the GEOBSERVATORY frame the live demos will concern 3D, augmented and immersive reality.

Municipalities, collection of 1.7 billion euros with fines. So titled on the front page Il Sole 24 Ore Sunday 8 April. The assumption is not new, and many wonder if this represents only a ploy of local public administrations to replenish the often bloodless municipal coffers. Just drive: the 2018 safety campaign from Anas

Anas, TTS Italia supporting member, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Transport and the State Police, has launched a new safety campaign to make drivers aware about the importance of being really concentrated when driving. The main objective of the campaign is tio underline wrong behavior when driving such using the mobile phone. On this regard, a special App was developed which put the smartphone in “driving mode” with the possibility to send a message to all own contacts informing them about the impossibility to answer the phone.

Macnil GT Alarm at the Automotive Dealer Day di Verona

Macnil GT Alarm, TTS Italia ordinary member, was one of the protagonists of the Automotive Dealer Day in Verona, the European reference event for operators in the automotive sector, an opportunity to meet for dealers, manufacturers and companies in the supply chain in an independent context.
Macnil presented the advantages of the special ALARM GT Black Box for everyone: from car manufacturers to insurance companies, from resellers and installers to end users.

The Viasat research on cargo crime: less stolen but 51% vanishes

It is called "Cargo Crime", an expression that sums up the crimes committed against heavy vehicles. According to an EU mapping, the threats of organized crime are increasing throughout Europe and are becoming increasingly violent in some countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and unfortunately also Italy.
According to the data contained in the 13th edition of the Dossier Autotrasporto of VIASAT GROUP, an ordinary member of TTS Italia, processed by the Traffic Police and in the consolidation phase, in Italy 1,617 cargos thefts were recorded in 2017 (134 a month, more than 4 per day), over 23% less than the previous year when they had been 2,120. Puglia is the most risky region of Italy with its 266 thefts.
In terms of findings, the statistics do not differ much from those of the previous year. In fact, just over 56% of stolen vehicles are found, a trend in line with that of previous years. In short, if it is true that less Tir is stolen in Italy, almost half vanishes. And continue to be mainly technological and electronic products, drugs, cigarettes, clothing and food products to attract more thieves.
The statistics attest the effectiveness of the best technological solutions available today by recording less thefts and more vehicles found. Satellite telematics, despite a modest investments, turns out to be a precious and indispensable tool for those companies wishing to protect their fleet and the goods they transport. In fact, the value of goods stolen in the supply chain is well over 8 billion, half of which happens on trucks. And thanks to the possibility of geolocalizing the vehicle anytime and anywhere, the company also obtains important results in terms of logistic efficiency, reduction of operating costs and improvement of service levels.

TomTom launches TomTom Camper and TomTom Go Basic sat navs

TomTom, TTS Italia ordinary member, announced the launch of the TomTom Camper and TomTom GO Basic
The 6″ fully-interactive touchscreen TomTom GO Camper includes Lifetime Camper and Caravan World maps – which help make sure that drivers are driving on the right road suited for vehicle type, size, weight and speed, while included exclusive camper-specific POIs from partners such as ADAC and ANWB ensure that drivers can find camper spots and camping sites along the way. Holiday planning is made even more enjoyable, TomTom Road Trips, personalising your adventure up mountains, along coastal roads, into forests and beyond, as well as adding destinations from smartphone via TomTom MyDrive. Advance warnings on the TomTom GO Camper will let drivers know whenever they’re approaching a fixed, mobile or average speed camera, and remind them of the speed limit.
The 5″ or 6″ fully-interactive touchscreen TomTom GO Basic includes new features such as more powerful hardware, updates over Wi-Fi and smartphone notifications. Also included are Lifetime Maps and Traffic updates, with a three-month trial of TomTom Speed Cameras. The TomTom GO Basic’s built-in Wi-Fi means that drivers no longer need to connect to a computer to get the latest maps and software updates. In addition, by connecting a smartphone, the new TomTom GO Basic reads aloud smartphone notifications such as text messages. Viasat Group take over 51% of the Italian company Anthea and consolidates its position in the waste management sector

Conference "ITS & PON Metro 2014-2020: present and future of Metropolitan Cities" - 20/21 June 2018 - Florence

TTS Italia, in collaboration with Agenzia di Coesione Territoriale, the Authority managing the PON METRO programme, is organising the conference “ITS & PON Metro 2014-2020: present and future of Metropolitan Cities”, taking place 20 and 21 June in Florence, at Palazzo Medici Riccardi.
The event is a follow up of the previous conference organized in Palermo in 2016, to know and understand how Cities used PON Metro fundings and what are the next steps.
The event will involve all Metropolitan Cities as well as representatives of the industry to draft an overview of the technological solutions at disposal for cities.

TTS Italia at “CONNECTED MOBILITY FORUM 2018” – 26 June 2018 – Milan

TTS Italia, represented by the President Rossella Panero, will be among the speakers of the first edition of CONNECTED MOBILITY FORUM 2018”, organised by The Innovation Group on the 26 June in Milan.
The “Connected Mobility Forum 2018” will discuss connected and autonomous vehicles as well as the new mobility models by involving the moste relevant actors and stakeholders of the sector.
The following topics will be discussed: Connected & Autonomous Car, enabling infrastructures; Customer Big Data and the shared mobility new business model; insurance Telematics; cybersecurity; Data-driven for transport.

TTS Italia at MaaS 2018 in Sydney

TTS Italia participated in Sydney on May 3, 2018 at the "MaaS 2018", an international event organized by ITS Australia on the topic of Mobility as a Service which saw the participation of both the industrial sector and institutions around the world on the actual potential of implementation of the MaaS in which trends, critical issues and ongoing projects have emerged. TTS Italia, represented by the General Secretary Olga Landolfi, took part in the "Scalable opportunities for smart journey" session with an intervention entitled "From Mobility Services Payment Systems to MaaS: Towards common guidelines in Italy". Landolfi has also participated in the round table "Making it work", an opportunity to highlight the opportunities, but also the critical issues, in Italy for the full implementation of the MaaS.

TTS Italia at the round table in Rome on connected and autonomous vehicles

On 12 May, TTS Italia took part at the round table on autonomous and connected vehicles organized by Consulta Cittadina di Roma within the initiative #Rome4Life.
The # Rome4Life event represented a moment of reflection, communication and information on the issues of road safety and sustainable mobility open to all citizens, Institutions, Forces of the Order, the world of the School, associations and representatives involved in these issues.
In particular, the Round Table on autonomous and connected vehicles discussed how mobility is facing a major change thanks to increasingly autonomous and connected vehicles, able to bring new levels of safety and new benefits to road mobility.
