Pietro Spirito, President of the Port Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea

Italy has recently signed the Blockchain Partnership Initiative promoted by the European Union and Europe in general is putting many funds on this technology. What is it exactly?
The blockchain is a tool for the innovative sharing of databases in a specialist market. This technology allows to drastically reduce, up to zero, the indirect costs of the production and logistics process, resulting in powerful increases in efficiency.

What could be the future developments in general and for the transport world in particular?
We are in the presence of a discontinuity not only technological, but also organizational. The sharing of information allows to reduce transaction costs and to reduce the circulation of paper documents, resulting in a drastic reduction of administrative operations and greater traceability of processes. The orientation towards the use of this technique, however, passes through a cultural revolution of management and corporate values. We must be aware that information must also be shared with competitors, as well as with customers and with the entire community of stakeholders.

What are the critical issues to be overcome for the development of these technologies?
First of all, it will be necessary to regulate the use of these platforms, which - as tools - can certainly be placed at the service of the community, businesses, logistics, but can also lead to pollution in transactions: the system is based on trust and must provide for penalties for those who break the fiduciary mechanism. Then, tools for training and for the reconversion of professional skills must be put in place. Investing in human resources is a crucial component of the change in technological paradigm. Finally, it will be necessary to invest in the culture of sharing information in the business community: only when the awareness that it is necessary to cooperate, and not just compete, will it be possible to move towards the digital world of the blockchain.

As President of a Port Authority, which are in your opinion the systems already on the market whose use should be incentivized to improve logistics?
We live a season of profound changes in the structure of information systems. The treatment of big data will induce - through these tools - an unavoidable change in the logics of business management. For logistics, digitization is equivalent to containerization, due to the importance of discontinuity. As with the transition to the container, a dramatic productivity jump was made, with the consequent chain effects, so with the blockchain the administrative costs of the transactions will collapse, affecting the average logistics around 15%.

Finally, looking to the future (even next) what are the devices and the connections that you think will be decisive for improving the world of transport and in particular the port sector?
Physical and telematic connections are strategic factors of competitive advantage for the territories and businesses. For logistics in general, but for maritime traffic in particular, the digital revolution profoundly changes the coordinates of the business. For example, think of the new company that was recently set up to create the container transport blockchain: Maersk, the world's leading container shipowner, and IBM, a colossus of IT innovations, have joined together. If the experimentation of the blockchain model under construction will succeed in creating the common platform in the segment of container traffic on an international scale, a new push towards the processes of globalization will be determined.

Who is Pietro Spirito. Graduated in Political Science at the Federico II University of Naples, since December 2016 he is the president of the Authority of the port system of the central Tyrrhenian Sea. DUEL

Duel proposes cutting-edge technological solutions for the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) market. For this purpose, more than 40% of the company's resources are dedicated to research and development, in continuous collaboration with the academic world.

Just one year after its foundation, on 1994, Duel created the first European virtual set design system for RAI, while in 2001 it provided the company TVfiles with the first worldwide platform for the satellite transmission of video content with IP protocol.

Duel was responsible for the introduction of the first multimedia technology platform for mobility services for citizens. From the first CCISS information system, Viaggiare Informati, for RAI in the 80's, through the new technological platform for the Campania Region, Muoversi in Campania, to the present day with the latest multimedia platform for infomobility "Full Datex II" for the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, recently adopted by 5T Turin.

Founder and CEO of Duel is Riccardo Colasanti, a cum laude electro-technical engineer. He grew up in professional terms in IBM Italy, then as manager in the Fintermica group assuming the responsibility of general manager Staff, and finally, as an entrepreneur, with the founding of the company Telesia and then of the Duel in 1994.

PRODUCT IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Traffic Over Voice

The traffic Over voice platform, which was completed in 2016, offers a service for the distribution of personalized voice traffic news. On 13 September 2018, the "International Searching Authority" gave a positive opinion for the granting of the International Patent. All claims of the patent have been declared both with novelty and inventive activity.

The proposed original process creates a traffic bulletin in a natural language, specific to the needs of the user, analyzing, grouping and summarize, in real time, hundreds of thousands of measurements of speed and traffic events related to roads graphs with millions of arches.

Already a year before, TomTom had acknowledged its worldwide uniqueness by signing an exclusive distribution agreement for the Radio and Automotive Web markets. Thanks to the collaboration with TOMTOM, the service is now available in Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, French, Western and Central Europe and North and South America.

TWO QUESTIONS TO…

Riccardo Colasanti, Duel CEO

Who is interested in the TOV service?
The TOV application, for a personalized voice traffic service, is proposed to large companies that want to integrate it into their branded applications.
The application, typically always active, offers the user useful information in total driving safety, and the company an opportunity for initiatives and promotional messages based on localized geo profiles.
For web radio and multimedia streaming a simple SDK will allow the music provider or the radio to integrate traffic messages into the content transmitted.
To the drivers involved in the distribution in metropolitan areas, Duel proposes a virtual assistant for an optimization of the service in terms of business profitability and reduction of the environmental impact.
The virtual assistant reprocesses the delivery plan dynamically, taking in account the time windows linked to the individual delivery operations and the actual traffic conditions made available by the TOV platform together with the vehicle data, detected by the on-board device or mobile applications.
The service uses sophisticated "Vehicle Routing with dynamic Time Windows" algorithms elaborated by the Research Centre for Transport and Logistics (CTL) of the University of Rome La Sapienza. The activity of research and development, for the realization of the new service of the Duel, have enjoyed a co-financing of Lazio Innova.

What are the short-term objectives?
1. To offer large national and international companies the use of the TOV service, perhaps exclusively for their market sector.
2. To complete the realization of our virtual advertising system, innovative in the way of distribution customized for each user on desktops, mobile devices, Apple TV, Smart TV.

The TM2.0 platform as an enabler of the MaaS and its employment in MyCorridor

During the ITS World Congress held in Copenhagen on 17-21st of September 2018, SWARCO MIZAR presented a study about the convergence of two current major trends in the transportation world, namely MaaS (“Mobility as a Service”) and TM2.0 (“cooperation between traffic managers and service providers”); the specific case study described is MyCorridor project.

MyCorridor (mycorridor.eu) is a 3-year project, funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme, and its overall objective is to achieve sustainable travel in urban and interurban areas and across borders by replacing private vehicle ownership by private vehicle use. The project looks into connecting services from various service providers and providing the traveller with alternatives to replace their own vehicle trip with combined shared vehicles and multimodal transport solutions. The project is part of the “Mobility as a Service” concept that puts users at the core of transport services, offering them tailor-made mobility solutions based on their individual needs.

In MyCorridor, SWARCO MIZAR leads the implementation of the TM2.0 concept in the MaaS environment in order to extend the TM2.0 platform beyond the Traffic Management world by providing solutions that incorporate multi-modal, seamless, flexible, reliable, user-friendly, all inclusive, price-worthy and environmentally sustainable travel within cities and regions and most importantly across all Europe. The MaaS concept can be defined as “Integration of various forms of transport services into a single mobility service accessible on demand” (maas-alliance.eu) to allow travellers for continuous travelling within a geographic region independently of the transport mode offering integrated payment options. Therefore, MaaS can be considered a tool for building sustainable communities across three pillars: environment, quality of life and social welfare.

However, in many cases MaaS schemes omit smooth transition from private vehicle ownership towards car sharing/usage as well as the MaaS schemes emphasize on services for travellers omitting how the optimization of mobility operations could be reached through traffic and multi modal transport management.

The concept of Traffic Management 2.0 (TM2.0), builds upon the deployment of connected vehicles and travellers in order to achieve convergence of mobility services and traffic management, combining actions of the individual travellers with the collective mobility objectives.

The traffic management industry offers well-proven ITS (Intelligent Transport System) solutions for improving traffic flow and safety using a large diversity of sensors along the roads. Traditional traffic data collection, monitoring and control represent mature technologies with clear business models. Still, an efficient Traffic Management integration into multimodal MaaS has not been attempted.

Starting from the identification of these current gaps, the challenge of MyCorridor project is to demonstrate, through the implementation of specific Use Cases, how the implementation of the TM2.0 concept in the MaaS platform could generate benefits and vice versa how the TM2.0 concept could be evolved from car owners to multi modal travellers (incl. ticketing, payment, etc.).

In this way, MyCorridor will lead to TM2.1, that stands for a new interactive concept for Traffic Management and Control, in which the travellers by using new technologies and sensors, become entirely part of the multimodal data supply chain. In addition, traffic management operators work together with the MaaS operators to optimize the transport road capacity through the implementation of common interactive transport management measures across all the available different transport layers. Therefore, according to the vision of TM2.1, the future of mobility management is to combine intelligently the individual traveller objectives (individual users’ optimization) together with network wide multi-modal management strategies (system optimization and equilibrium) in a win-win business model.

Finally, we can conclude that TM2.0 is an enabler for the deployment of MaaS platforms but also MaaS trend is an enabler for TM2.0 opening the door to the multimodal management (TM2.1 Framework) where “Interactive road transport management” can evolve in “Multimodal transport management”.

Agreement between Anas and MIT for mobile sensors on road network

The smartphones of individual drivers become "mobile sensors" for signaling the state of the pavement and road infrastructure (including bridges and viaducts) thanks to the technology introduced a year ago by the Senseable City Lab Consortium of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, directed by the Italian Carlo Ratti.
In recent days, Anas, TTS Italia supporting member, and MIT have announced an agreement to test this technology on two highway sections managed by Anas: the A90 Grande Raccordo Anulare in Rome and the A91 Rome-Fiumicino airport. The technology allows to exploit the data contained in the accelerometers contained in each smartphone: three researchers of the MIT will collect the data of users in transit on the two sections, especially vibrations and noises, and this will provide (by putting together all the data) a first screening (daily and in real time) on the situation of paving and bridges / viaducts. The data collected will be those from the ten cars Anas, in service every day on H24 Gra and Rome-Fiumicino, but also those coming from the smartphones of all users who have downloaded or will download the Anas app. All data will be collected anonymously.

Kapsch TrafficCom Completes Upgrade of Dallas-Fort Worth 511 Traveller Information System

Kapsch TrafficCom (Kapsch), TTS Italia ordinary member, announced the successful upgrade of the existing 511DFW platform and mobile app to a new “Next Generation” system for the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The new system, which is powered by the Kapsch EcoTrafiX™ software and for which Kapsch served as the lead systems integrator, positions the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area transportation network as a fully integrated asset. It allows agencies to share information, optimize operations, and balance traffic flow while providing travelers with personalized, real-time traffic and transit information that enables them to make better decisions about how they travel in the region.
The Dallas Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) project initially comprised the US 75 corridor and utilized an Information Exchange Network to provide regional agencies with real-time data about roadway conditions, which were shareable with the public via 511. Under the leadership of NCTCOG, the project scope increased to include more than 19 agencies in 12 counties and over 6,000 miles of regional roads. The new 511DFW system is a robust platform of integrated applications including a bilingual (English-Spanish) public website and 511 phone system, subscription-based XML web services, and new performance measures dashboard that analyzes road network conditions. During the system upgrade the mobile app, interactive voice response (IVR), web services, and 511 system were enhanced while Waze data was also introduced to facilitate incident detection capabilities and enhance the richness of traffic data collected in the system. These new features meet the increased demand of regional users, while offering enhanced situational awareness and coordination for all participating agencies.
The integrated platform is powered by the Kapsch EcoTrafiX™ software, which offers regional transportation agencies an integrated, multimodal platform for managing their transportation network and sharing real-time information with each other and the public. Kapsch EcoTrafiX™ boosts the efficiency of transportation operators by providing a fully map-based situational awareness of the entire intersections and arterials network, accelerating collaboration between stakeholders, optimizing safety and response plans via automatic incident detection, and forecasting future traffic conditions.
Kapsch will maintain the new system for NCTCOG for an additional two-year period, and will continue to enhance it based on new data sources and customer feedback as applicable.

TO Move: New GTT Torino App based on AEP VTS technology

TO Move, the GTT App, was officially presented on October 1st, through which users can buy tickets, validate them on board using validators and perform other functions. On the second day, more than 5,000 people have already downloaded and installed it.
The ticket can therefore be bought at any time and place, even at the stop.
TO Move is available from October 2 on Google Play Store and soon on the GTT site. At the moment it is compatible with Android phones equipped with NFC, from version 4.4 to version 8X and allows buying:
• City ticket, 1.70 euros, valid 100 minutes on the urban and suburban network plus a subway ride;
• Daily ticket, 3 euros and valid until the end of the service of the day of the first validation on the urban and suburban network and on the subway;
• Multidaily ticket, an electronic carnet composed of 7 Daily tickets, activated one at a time.
Once you download the App, you must enter your personal information before purchase, paying by credit card or prepaid. The card can be stored so as to avoid the hassle of re-entering the data at each purchase.
To validate the ticket purchased with TO Move simply bring the back of the smartphone to the validator. The expiration time of validity of the ticket will appear on the App.
TO Move was created by GTT using AEP VTS technology, TTS Italia ordinary member, for primary functions (purchase and validation, not for card reading).
Some brief notes for insiders: TO Move is already giving excellent results today October 3, customers are purchasing and validating without any problem. However, the following is noted:
• TO Move It has the great advantage of allowing travelers to fulfill the obligation of mandatory validation; this advantage is clear to public transport experts, as it is one of the primary methods of combating evasion but is less understandable by a part of the public;
• this advantage, thanks to NFC and VTS technology, it was obtained without any physical change to the thousands of AEP validators mounted on the vehicles, and therefore with limited investments; the addition of a QR-code optical reader would have been very expensive;
• NFC technology is now widely common and accepted, but when it comes to large numbers, it is inevitable that there is a microscopic part of the audience that, not understanding it or not having it available in the smartphone, may declare a little disappointed;
• at the moment, moreover, TO Move it can not be used on Apple smartphones, notoriously limited in this sense by the Manufacturer's choice;
• TO Move allows only emulating the current chip-on-paper; it is possible that the success obtained and the numerous requests of the Customers in this sense could induce the Authority to upgrade to the GTT cards, which can be supported by VTS technology.

TTS Italia in Livorno with the AUTOPILOT project

On October 19, in Livorno, the "Smart roads for autonomous vehicles" event took place in the framework of the European project AUTOPILOT (www.autopilot-project.eu), which involved TTS Italia among the co-organizers and participants.
The "Smart roads" covered by cars with automatic driving are not a distant future. Technologies already exist, but the added value for citizens and businesses depends on how they are integrated into services.
The AUTOPILOT project aims to demonstrate on 6 large-scale testbeds (5 in Europe and 1 in South Korea) that IoT (Internet of Things) technologies facilitate automatic guidance in several use cases for which testing is carried out in real time. Livorno hosts the Italian pilot site, and the event was an opportunity to demonstrate the results achieved so far, as well as to start a debate with citizens, institutions and businesses.
TTS Italia, in particular, represented by the General Secretary Olga Landolfi, has moderated the panel discussion on "Smart roads and autonomous driving vehicles impact on the future of the cities".
