Smart mobility for the Italian growth
TTS Italia presents its priorities in July

Enter a massive dose of technology into the passenger and freight mobility system in Italy to achieve those goals already reached in other countries with smart mobility, such as a 20% reduction in travel time and a 10% increase in infrastructure capacity . This is the objective of the proposals that TTS Italia will present in Rome on July 11th at the "Smart Mobility: an opportunity for growth" conference, addressing the Government and institutions, also in view of the next budget law, and the local administrations committed to drawing up the SUMPs.

TTS Italia will present two documents to guide the choices of institutions and local authorities and direct their priorities.

Italy is a country that moves by road. 91.19% of total movements (goods and people) take place on the road with obvious negative externalities in terms of congestion, environmental pollution and safety. To this it should be added that the demand for road transport presents significant territorial imbalances, as traffic flows are essentially concentrated on some critical lines and nodes around the main metropolitan and industrial areas of the country. On the security front, the absolute values of road accidents, even if lower in comparison with previous years (with the exception of the number of deaths that have returned to growth compared to the previous year), remain very high, especially in urban areas where there is about 75% of accidents, with extremely worrying social and economic impacts.

Smart management of mobility means significantly affecting critical issues. Experiences started in other European countries and in the United States have shown that the application of ITS leads to a reduction in travel time of 20%, to an increase in network capacity of 5-10%, to a decrease accidents of 10-15%, congestion of 15%, polluting emissions of 10% and energy consumption of 12%. These are benefits that can be obtained with relatively modest investments and, in any case, much lower percentages than those necessary for the construction of new infrastructures. In particular, according to European Commission data, every 1 euro invested in ITS cooperative services (C-ITS) yields 3 euros in terms of return in the period 2018-2030.

This is why TTS Italia is convinced that investing in smart mobility is a growth opportunity for Italy: a country that moves in a more intelligent and sustainable way produces development and progress.
The document "TTS Italia proposals for Smart Mobility" which will be presented and discussed in the first part of the morning of 11 July therefore indicates the priorities on which to intervene to restore momentum to the mobility system of people and goods, with the goal of introducing and expanding the use of intelligent transport technologies and systems.

In the second part of the morning, the dossier “ITS for SUMPs in Italian cities” will be presented, developed within the TTS Italia work group dedicated to ITS for SUMPs, that cities with over 100 thousand inhabitants are obliged to do by next August, meaning two years after the decree of 4 August 2017 of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on "Identification of guidelines for urban sustainable mobility plans". This document was drafted with the aim of creating a real guide with criteria for selecting ITS interventions in the PUMS for use and consumption by local authorities and cities.

PRODUCT IN THE SPOTLIGHT
GeoGuard

GeoGuard is an innovative, end-to-end service for precision and continuous monitoring of critical infrastructure and natural hazards. GeoGuard is comprised of a geodetic and environmental continuous control system combining a set of sensors based on last generation GNSS signal receivers and GeoCloud, a set of cloud-based signal processing services analysing raw data collected by GNSS receivers, correlating these with measurements of the conditions of the above layers of the atmosphere to achieve a precise estimation of the position of monitored points with millimetre accuracy.
GeoGuard is used for continuous surveillance of movements and stability of infrastructures, terrain and natural elements. A solution offered by Softeco, it enables monitoring the stability and physical integrity of critical infrastructures such as road and rail bridges, airport and port construction elements, terrain areas subject to landslide and subsidence phenomena, and to forecast natural hazards related to rain falls and extreme weather conditions.
Exploiting scientific research work carried out at Politecnico di Milano, GeoGuard results from a cooperation between Softeco and GReD, a spin-off company of Politecnico di Milano. GeoGuard is offered “as-a-service” to customers such as, for instance, motorway and road managing companies, ports and airports operation companies, local or national authorities having surveillance and control of land and infrastructures among their duties.

THREE QUESTIONS TO…

1) Safety of infrastructures and road conditions: where technology can help and why it is important?
Several international studies show that global investments necessary to build up and maintain critical infrastructures in the period 2015-2030 are in excess of 50.000 billion Euro. Through better management of existing infrastructures, savings for over 350 billion Euro could be achieved. However, one should consider the ageing of infrastructures and should prevent and manage effectively their degradation over time. Continuous and precise measurements of displacements of the infrastructures and of the surrounding land can help achieving such a result, preventing safety-critical situations and reducing the costs of maintenance and insurance.
By combining technologies such IoT, smart sensor networks, GNSS signal processing and cloud-based models and services, GeoGuard addresses this relevant market offering a solution that has shown to by highly effective and dependable in the monitoring and safety of primary transport infrastructures such as bridges, viaducts, road stretches affected by landslide and other terrain related issues, ports and airports, but also in other strategic infrastructure related domains such as dams and water pipelines, high voltage pylons, wind farms equipment, cultural heritage, stadiums and sports facilities.

2) Where did you apply GeoGuard and what are, in your view, its main strengths?
In Italy, GeoGuard has been deployed and it is in operation at several bridges managed by primary motorway operation companies, in critical land areas affecting road trunks and, on a wider perspective, on major dams and pylons of the national electricity transport network. Thanks to the international research background at the origin of GeoGuard, GeoGuard sensors and services are operating in Japan and we have recently entered a pilot initiative in Uganda. Infrastructures safety is a topic of a general interest worldwide. Currently, we are pursuing an interesting opportunity in Portugal.
The millimetre accuracy in estimating movements and displacements of rigid infrastructures and bodies is a major strength of GeoGuard. The system delivers to customers a configurable set of analyses, reports and alarm notifications when critical thresholds are exceeded. GeoGuard is offered as a turn-key service, without any need for the customer to buy any hardware or software component, that are offered as-a-service: the costs for the customers are only related to the use of the sensor network and of the monitoring services over the stream of data continuously generated by the sensors. For customers this means the capability to use leading edge technologies with the benefits of significant reductions not only of CAPEX but also of OPEX, as the operational costs of the monitoring infrastructure, both hardware and software, are borne by Softeco as the provider of the entire service.

3) A solid presence in the market of mobility, energy and advanced industry, recently Softeco has completed a relevant corporate development project opening up new significant business opportunities. What are the main advantages and potential effects on the company reference market?
The entry of Softeco in the industrial group led by Ternienergia at the end of 2016, allows us to streamline our market offer in the perspective of the smart digital company of the group, with a stronger focus on rapidly developing markets such as digital energy, smart city and green mobility. Thanks to a more rational organisation of our delivery Business Units in the reference markets, product development BUs and the research and innovation area, today it’s easier for us offering new and enhanced solutions for a more sustainable mobility, including our flagship products for flexible, on-demand collective transport services, for Mobility-as-a-Service, fleet management for roadside assistance services, multimodal travel and mobility information services. All in use by primary operators and service providers in our national and international market. But more than that, the synergy between the competencies in the electric domain provided by Ternienergia and those on automation and smart mobility offered by Softeco, are opening new opportunities for a significant growth in the market of electric mobility, with some initial relevant cooperation with primary e-mobility stakeholders in the national and foreign markets.

The EU project Drive2theFuture

Road transport automation is at our doorstep; it is not anymore an “if” but a “when” and “how” issue. Technology is out there already. Therefore, within the latest ERTRAC Roadmap on Automated Driving report, user awareness, acceptance and training formulate the first priority challenge. Questions related to vehicle taking over control from humans, change of mobility habits and experience, cost of commuting and travelling in the future, ethical decisions of a machine vs. a human, as well as the need of new driver training incentives for adapting to the technological evolution in future vehicles, are some of the key questions that are yet to be investigated.
Within this scenario, the project Drive2theFuture has as its’ mission is to prepare “drivers”, travellers and vehicle operators of the future to accept and use connected, cooperative and automated transport modes and the industry of these technologies to understand and meet their needs and wants.
In order to reach this goal Drive2theFuture will develop training, HMI concepts, incentives policies and other cost efficient measures to promote and then to comparatively assess several alternative connected, shared and automated transport. Use Cases for all transport modes and with all types of users (drivers, travellers, pilots, VRUs, fleet operators and other key stakeholders) will be addressed in order to understand, simulate, regulate and optimize their sustainable market introduction; including societal awareness creation, acceptance enhancement and training on use. 31 partners from 13 European Countries are working on this and Kicked of the activities last May, in Thessaloniki.
SWARCO Mizar, who is tackling the topic of Connected Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) since more than 15 years through funded research and real-life implementations, is supporting Drive2theFuture with the available technology and knowledge for exploring how Traffic Management Systems will evolve. Within this framework, SWARCO Mizar will lead the Rome Pilot with the support of Rome Mobility Agency in training the operators for facing the new challenges determined by this transportation paradigm shift. SWARCO Mizar will also investigate the connection between CCAM and MaaS, as well as the business opportunities that will arise along with this transportation revolution.

Kapsch TrafficCom installs traffic control system in Avilés 

Kapsch TrafficCom, TTS Italia ordinary member, has been awarded by the City Council of Avilés, in the Northern Central area of Spain, to renew the management of the traffic control system over the next four years. The contract, which exceeds EUR 1 million in value, includes the implementation of EcoTrafiX™, a system designed to capture, aggregate, archive and monitor various sources of traffic data.
The collected data helps municipal technical management to analyse and manage traffic in real-time. As a result, even smaller municipalities, like Avilés with a population of only 78,000, can examine and identify the causes of congestion and provide effective solutions. Not only does the project enhance mobility efficiency, but also includes improvements in road safety, by controlling access into the historic centre. EcoTrafiX™ will be integrated to suit the current systems of the city of Avilés. However, there is potential to expand the solution by integrating additional functionalities and services.
Traffic Management is not only valuable for major cities.
“We are focused on diversifying our services and expanding the availability of our solutions”, explains Andrè Laux, COO Kapsch TrafficCom. “This is a great opportunity to demonstrate how the advantages of urban mobility management can be adjusted for municipalities of various sizes.”
With the new contract, Kapsch increases its urban mobility management footprint in Spain. EcoTrafiX™ system is already implemented in Madrid, Malaga, Bilbao, Vitoria, Castellón, Donostia, La Coruña, Valladolid, Palencia and Huelva.

Politecnico of Milan: travelling by bus is safe

On the occasion of the Mobility Innovation Tour 2019, a series of conferences in various Italian cities organized by the specialized magazine AUTOBUS and dedicated to the evolution of the world of people transport through innovation, an unpublished study by the Politecnico of Milan, TTS Italia ordinary member, was presented on the world of long-distance coaches with a focus on safety.
The report "Traveling by bus? A security"(edited by Prof. Paolo Beria of the Politecnico), in addition to showing trends and statistics related to the accident rate, it returns an accurate photograph of a sector from liberalization to today. In the introduction to the market trend, the study shows that in the face of an overall growth in turnover between 2011 and 2017, the operating results and profits were significantly reduced.
On the subject of safety, the study shows that the average annual number of accidents with injured persons involved in extra-urban buses compared to the total number of accidents with injured is 6 out of 1,000 and in 3 cases out of 1,000 the bus is innocent.
To increase safety and reduce the margins of human error the study recommends the adoption of the only truly effective measure: the monitoring of the conditions of the routes and the guarantee of support for drivers from an operations center.
The most important thing - emphasizes the relationship - is to guarantee drivers adequate breaks from driving in terms of frequency and duration, also in relation to external conditions (traffic, night).

Road safety: best practices, investments and the new awareness campaign dedicated to the young people of A4 Holding

On June 13, in Verona, the A4 Holding organized the press conference to present the investments and best practices for road safety implemented by the company that manages the A4 Brescia-Padua and A31 Valdastico motorway sections, and to which it belongs also A4Mobility, TTS Italia ordinary member.
On this occasion, the new A4 Holding campaign was presented to young people to promote the dissemination of a safety culture on the road among young people.

Sinelec wins tender for radiocommunication infrastructure

Sinelec S.p.A., TTS Italia ordinary member, has won the tender issued by Autostrade per l’Italia S.p.A.
for the supply, transport and unloading of radio equipment for the construction of the radiocommunication infrastructure, at the service of the Fire Fighters, within development tunnels of more than 1000 m and in areas adjacent to the entrance and exit portals, establishing a communication infrastructure to support emergency and emergency operations.

ROAD SAFETY FORUM - Ideas and experiences of the protagonists of road safety in comparison

The Road Safety Forum 2019 was held in Verona on June 27th, during which the first "Driving Stations Observatory" created by A4 Holding was presented.
A4 Holding, a company of the Abertis Group, has created the first “Driving styles observatory” to analyze risky behavior on the highway and monitor the evolution of results over time in order to create initiatives and campaigns based on objective indicators in order to improve safety on the road.
The safety of the traveler is the first objective for the operators of the sector, be they mobility operators, infrastructure managers, vehicle and vehicle manufacturers or representatives of organizations and institutions.
The aim of the Forum was to involve the protagonists of the sector to share ideas, experiences and projects. It was an opportunity to describe the current and future scenario of road safety through the experiences of those who are called upon to manage it every day.

SAVE THE DATE – MobilitAria Tour 2019 – 4 July, Turin
Turin, Member of the Local Authorities Platform of TTS Italia, will be the first city to host the "MobilitAria Tour 2019", the presentation event of the second Report "MobilitAria 2019" of Kyoto Club and Institute on Atmospheric Pollution of the National Council of Research (CNR-IIA) carried out together with OPMUS ISFORT.
The study analyzes the quality of the air and the framework of policies and investments in urban mobility made over the last two years in the 14 metropolitan cities.
The conference will also be an opportunity to open a discussion on the projects and initiatives undertaken by the main stakeholders of the Turin metropolitan area, aimed at improving transport and mobility with a view to sustainability for citizens and the environment.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Department of Traffic and Transport of the Municipality of Turin and 5T, TTS Italia ordinary member.

Sardinia has the First EMV- ONE
The first ONE produced by AEP, TTS Italia ordinary member, is now active on ARST vehicles in Carloforte (south Sardinia), on S. Pietro Island in Sulcis archipelago, location of the “Girotonno 2019”. A four days cultural event with arts, music, shows and local delicacy.
ONE certainly represents one of the most interesting innovations among those recently introduced by AEP.
ONE is one of the most relevant innovations in the electronic ticketing system world.
The ONE, thanks also to the AEP ET-PASS system will allow to purchase tickets on-board, using  contactless bank cards. This service will be available for the entire duration of the “Girotonno” event at the usual ticket price without additional fees (more information here).
 As shown in the picture, ONE is an autonomous and independent unit, exclusively dedicated to the validation of bank cards; it doesn’t require a dedicated ticketing system and can be added in parallel to the existing one, from AEP or any other vendor. The system doesn’t require any integration and can operate alongside other systems without conflicts.
ONE includes an internal 3G/4G modem (even if it can use an external router) and therefore requires only the power supply taken from the vehicle's electrical system to operate.
ONE obviously holds all the necessary certifications, such as PCI-PTS, EMV level 1 & 2 for Mastercard, VISA and American Express cards, in addition to those typical of the automotive environment ("e-mark").

TTS Italia enters the National Sharing Mobility Observatory

TTS Italia has become member of the National Sharing Mobility Observatory, composed of a multiplicity of subjects, more or less directly involved in the development of sharing mobility services. Differentiated subjects that give the dimension of how the phenomenon is varied and transversal, bringing benefits not only directly connected to the transport sector but also with important environmental, social and economic impacts. Sharing mobility, and its growth, are therefore the result of synergies that involve not only operators, who represent the core of the sector, but also multiple stakeholders from institutions, the industrial, commercial, academic and from the field of search.
The National Sharing Mobility Observatory, launched in September 2015, is promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Land and Sea Protection, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Foundation for Sustainable Development. The objective of the initiative is to create a platform for collaboration between public and private institutions, operators of shared mobility and the world of research to analyze, support and promote the phenomenon of sharing mobility in Italy.

In November the new Citytech edition!

TTS Italia will be sponsoring the Citytech 2019 edition, an incubator of ideas and projects for the cities of the third millennium, whose key words are: new, autonomous, electric and shared mobility, MaaS, urban planning, big data, high tech, sharing and sustainability.
The event aims to identify, to show and to heed innovative and effective proposals which, giving new value to common areas, whether urban centers or suburbs, may contribute to improve citizens’ quality of life, their connection with the cities or between people.
The event consists of a CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION program, designed on the current most innovative topics of the mobility field, which will give participants the opportunity to meet the major representatives of the mobility and transport industries, taking part in debates and creating networking opportunities, useful for growing their business, finding suppliers, customers and partners.
The fil rouge that will connect the deepened topics is the development of the so-called “DIGITAL CULTURE” that permeates all the spheres of our life and therefore also of the mobility field, recreating the urban landscape and the use of services connected to it.
The coordination of the huge amount of people living in the today’s megacities can’t take place without the use of digital technologies, for the management of large amount of data, for the developing of essential services for the citizen, from the mobility to the health care, and for the efficiency of all control system, from traffic to safety.
Integrated transports, mobility co-design and urban planning, energy requalification, electric mobility, technologies to collect of information on the territory, expansion of car sharing and bike sharing, there are some of the core features of the so called “innovative district” that is what allows easy connections between people, promotes the creation of long term initiatives, attracts talents and capitals, encourages sharing and collaborative behaviour, always taking into account the needs of sustainability.

MyCorridor is a 3-year project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
MaaS is the central theme of the project, in particular the MaaS applied to cities and regions connected by corridors.

TTS Italia at the workshop “Connection and cooperation (C-ITS): where are we?”

Diego Galletta, Vice President of TTS Italia, was one of the speakers at the workshop "Connection and cooperation (C-ITS): where are we?", Organized by the Observatory "Moving with Intelligence", on 11 June in Rome.
The Observatory continues its work with a workshop dedicated to services for cooperative driving, based on communication between Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and between Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), the so-called "C-ITS" services. After years of research and development and after delicate and complex investigations carried out by the most authoritative national and international bodies, today it seems, finally, the time to define an action plan that, in a framework of European rules, can lead to the launch of services real. The European Commission, well aware that the development and dissemination of cooperative services are conditioned by the existence of certain rules and accepted standards, has recently adopted the Delegated Regulations, intended, in the intentions, to enter into force on 1 January 2020. The Regulation is, in reality, only a step in the development process: the current version will, by precise EC commitment, be subject to continuous revision, to incorporate the technologies that will soon enter the markets and new services; it is necessary, above all, that all the players, from vehicle manufacturers to road managers, from system suppliers to service operators, from national authorities to local authorities, actively participate in the implementation.
The workshop wanted to take stock of the Italian situation and short-term prospects, comparing the different positions. During the discussion, after a brief introduction session, the results of the experiments and the new proposals were discussed, as well as analyzing the prospects for launching the services, listening to the position of the car makers, the infrastructure managers, the suppliers of the technology and service operators; the presence of representatives of the Commission and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will allow us to examine the regulatory and support framework.
