Stefano Giorgetti, Deputy Mayor for Transport and Mobility in Florence

TTS Italia organised in June, in Florence, the conference on the future of the Metropolitan Cities. In your opinion, what are the pillars for the development and sustainability of the urban centres?
For many change habits, give priority to the public transport that must be reliable, punctual, safe and environmentally friendly. Extend the cycle and pedestrian mobility by increasing the cycle paths and pedestrian areas of the city. Implement the infrastructures necessary for the development of electric mobility, including logistics, to discourage the use of private vehicles. Only in this way will we be able to improve mobility and sustainability in urban centers.

What are the choices of Florence within the PON Metro?
Since 1998, the City of Florence is deeply committed in the sustainability of the city and today we have an action plan for the sustainable energy based on the emissions which are especially linked to mobility.
Therefore for Florence, one of the pillar is the focus on smart, electric and sustainable mobility. The funds from PON Metro have been invested in tramways and new and efficient fleets for the public transport as well in systems for the integration of the traffic and mobility information.   

One of the project is a system for public and private traffic control and management on the urban network. What are the required steps and timing for implementation?
The Municipality of Florence has an ITS platform, the mobility supervisor, which oversees the coordination of the telematic control mobility subsystems and, through a multi-channel information platform, allows communication to users, in real time, of the conditions of the mobility.
In addition, the municipal administration has recently activated the Mobility Operations Center responsible for the use of the supervisor for the computerized management of mobility and the infomobility platform, to ensure information to citizens in real time both through the traditional channels and using new technologies, also focusing on applications for tablets and smartphones.
The objective of the project is the improvement and completion of the interfaces (both data acquisition and implementation) of the supervisor with the various ITS subsystems not yet fully integrated with the supervision system.
All this will obviously be accompanied by the creation of communication solutions aimed at maximizing the usefulness for the flow of traffic information generated by the supervisor. This synergic integration involves first of all integrated planning, already completed, which led to the publication of the notice for the identification of the supply of the IT platform for the collection, analysis and dissemination of data on mobility. The offers have been received and then we enter the evaluation phase which will be followed by the selection of the operator. This is the first phase of the multi-intervention that sees in 2018 the year of the awards and in 2019 the realization of the overall intervention.  

The City of Florence has recently acquired new buses making the fleet quite “young”. Are there any forthcoming tenders?
The renewal program of the bus fleet, by the company that performs the service of the public transport, provides for new deliveries at the end of the year also with some hybrid vehicles. In 2019 we will still have the replacement of the fleet with hybrid buses and starting from 2020/2021 with the first electric vehicles. From next year the average life of vehicles will go from 7 years to 5, a result that few cities can boast.

Tuscany aims at the integration of differente transport modes (road-rail-bike). What are the strategies in this sense?
Of course we are aiming at an integration of public transport because we consider it essential if we want to direct users to this mode of travel. This is why the integration between the train and the tramway is important, with the road mainly in adduction to the strong lines and the bike for the last mile. Certainly all this will be facilitated also with a careful tariff integration that is attractive and convenient.

Finally the goods. Florence, like all medieval cities, has a busy historic center for deliveries. Are you pursuing solutions and projects in this sense?
Of course logistics is very important for the life of cities, especially in the historical centers, but it can not even be "suffocating" because of their liveability. In September we will start a series of meetings to review the current characteristics of the limited traffic zones and also aspects of logistics with the aim that during the day we can find more "windows" for access and distribution and that everything will develop exclusively with small and electric vehicles that can stay in spaces dedicated to loading and unloading controlled by video systems.

Who is Stefano Giorgetti. Architect by profession, he was a city councilor in Signa for four legislatures, from 1980 to 2004. Among the founders of the Committee for Prodi "Signa for Italy we want", he was also the last provincial secretary of the Democrats. Passionate about sports, he held the position of president of the Volleyball Signa. In 2004 he was elected provincial councilor and he is now in charge of transport. He is 58 years old, he was born and lives in Signa. A Catholic involved in politics, he is married and has two children.

EVM - Enhanced Vehicle Management

The Omoove's EVM is able to monitor on-board diagnostics and plan both ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions. In addition, the platform is able to manage multiple fleets and multiple users for each fleet. Our technological solution allows real time application of advanced analytics to behavioral, contextual, diagnostic and other telematic data, so that smart decisions can be taken in fleet management.

Which solutions does Omoove propose to effectively respond to the latest trends in fleet management technology platforms?
An assumption is due. We are moving from a product-oriented approach to a purely self-service approach. Customers have new needs to which the so-called 'self-service economy' must be able to respond quickly and completely. The main characters are precisely the users who, by themselves, make or realize the desired product basing on their needs. Omoove has developed a new advanced fleet management solution. That is EVM, which stands for Enhanced Vehicle Management.

Which features and advantages are offered by the Omoove's EVM?
EVM is able to meet the real needs and demands of fleet managers, who today increasingly need value-added services such as an optimal vehicle maintenance, achieved thanks to the correlation of users' driving habits, as well as diagnostics on vehicles and the use of big data analytics, able to produce accurate predictive models. And again, the analysis of driving style, the reporting of diagnostic "alerts" in real time, able to optimize time, economy, safety and productivity. The Fleet Manager can record and edit vehicle data using a console designed to provide a complete overview of all fleet vehicles, positioned on a map, and the details of their operating status. All data produced during the use of the vehicle can be used to generate a report about the driving behavior of the driver. The newly developed platform does not forget the driver, offering the possibility to use the available services also for personal vehicles and other vehicles for commercial use. The App ranks the driving behaviour, advising the driver whether it be opportune to follow e-learning sessions in order to improve the safety and reduce the strain of the vehicle.

SOCIALCAR

SocialCar (http://socialcar-project.eu/) is a H2020 European research project just completed, coordinated by FIT Consulting and carried out by a large European consortium, including, among other TTS Italia. The project addressed intermodal mobility, moving from the initial state-of-the-art, where journey planning tools do not provide information for multi-modal trips connecting individual and collective transport services; often, the proposed options require multiple public transport interchanges and result in long and convoluted multi-leg journeys. SocialCar enhances the public transport network by a wider variety of services including carpooling/sharing, bike sharing, taxi and other on-demand services. Citizens can gain access to a unique service that optimises the use of all available mobility resources in the sharing economy.
SocialCar developed an IT platform and related mobile app, made available as Open Source, providing planning and booking services for multimodal trips: the unique feature of the system is to discover and propose to users travel itineraries combining both Public Transport (the scheduled service) and carpooling or other on-demand services, enhancing therefore the potentialities of the whole mobility network in cities. By developing data processing flows and algorithms, the project responded to the challenge of matching travel requests with the integrated public-private transport supply. With an Innovation Management Board, the project involved external influencers who regularly provided advice and paved the way for a market roll-out and mainstreaming of the developed solutions. SocialCar is a research and innovation action bringing together ITS developers, social and economic scientists, transport engineers, carpooling providers and public authorities from Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Poland, Switzerland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain and Belgium. The project solutions were subjected to a three-level trial in 10 European test sites. The most advanced trial level examined the potential for early adoption by end-users in 4 cities: Brussels, Edinburgh, Canton Ticino and Ljubljana.
SocialCar main objectives are to reduce travel times and costs, to increase comfort and convenience and to contribute to a better environmental performance of urban transport networks. The achieved benefits are relating to social inclusion, service orientation for citizens, accessibility of urban areas and transport efficiency. Consequently, SocialCar, in its post-project uptake, is expected to contribute to the EU 2020 targets on energy efficiency, in particular to the efforts to increase the car occupancy rate and it is now looking for possible investing subject willing to deploy the IT platform in other cities. SocialCar will alleviate traffic congestion and carbon footprint, will reduce the operating costs of individual car-poolers and will increase the share of public transport users.

The project produced tangible results summarised as follows:
• An integrated software platform made available as Open Source for further developments.
• A novel data exchange protocol especially designed for carpooling, documented in public project deliverables.
• A deep evaluation framework and related assessment reporting the outcomes of project experimentations.
• Several business models for potential product roll-out, along with market framework analysis.
• The financial assessment elaborated for the 10 project sites with a dedicated tool publicly available and easily configurable.

SocialCar is a clear step beyond state of the art solutions, offering a completely new approach towards urban and smart mobility.

ACI-ISTAT report: in 2017 the number of road victims increased

The annual report by ACI, a founding member of TTS Italia, and Istat on road safety, shows a worsening situation: + 2.9% deaths despite a decrease in accidents (-0.5%). In 2017 there were 174,933 road accidents with injuries to people in Italy, slightly down compared to 2016, with 3,378 victims (dead within 30 days of the event) and 246,750 injured. Pedestrians are increasing among the victims (600, + 5.3%) and above all motorcyclists (735, + 11.9%) while the dead motorists are almost stable (1,464, -0.4%); down mopeds (92, -20.7%) and cyclists (254, -7.6%).
Compared to the previous year, accidents and injuries recorded a slight decrease (-0.5% and -1.0%). The number of serious injuries was stable: based on hospital data, in 2017, there were 17,309, a value almost similar to that of 2016 (-0.1%). The ratio of serious and deadly wounds fell to 5.1 from 5.3 on the previous year. The serious injury rate on the resident population is 28.6 serious injuries per 100,000 inhabitants (40.1 for men and 17.7 for women).
The increase in the number of deaths in Italy mainly affects that recorded on motorways and extra-urban roads (296 and 1,615 dead, + 8.0% and + 4.5% on the previous year). On the other hand, a smaller increase was recorded on urban roads (1,467 dead, + 0.3%). In the large municipalities there is an opposite trend, with a 5.8% decrease in the number of victims in the inhabited area.
In the European Union, the number of road accident victims decreased in 2017, albeit to a modest extent (-1.6% compared to 2016): overall, there were 315 against 25,720 in 2016. In the comparison between 2017 and 2010 (year of benchmark of the European road safety strategy) deaths are reduced by 19.9% at European level and by 17.9% in Italy. Every year, in 2017 there are 49.7 deaths per road accident in the EU28 and 55.7 in our country, which drops from 14th to 18th place in the European ranking.
Among the most frequent wrong behaviors are driving distraction, failure to respect precedence and too high speed (overall 40.8% of cases). The most sanctioned violations of the Highway Code are speeding, the lack of use of security devices and the use of mobile phones while driving.
In 2017, the first registrations of vehicles increased by 7% compared to the previous year while the vehicle fleet grew by 1.7%. Motorway travel on the network under concession grew by 2.2% compared to 2016, with almost 84 billion km traveled.

Innovative ideas for a better mobility: iMOVE Ideathon call launched!

The Open Call for the first IMOVE Ideathon, which will be held in Turin (Italy) from 20 to 22 September 2018, was launched, organised by UITP, City of Turin, member of the TTS Local Authorities Platform, 5T, TTS Italia ordinary member, and Youth for Public Transport (Y4PT) within the European project iMOVE.
Ideathons are brainstorming events, where participants throw in their ideas to solve strategic challenges and present their innovations to get feedbacks from a pool of experts, all in a dynamic and interactive framework. The call is open to innovators and designers of all categories, students and professionals (creative developers, IT experts, innovators, startuppers, etc) of the various disciplines (engineering, design, information technology, architecture, transport, urban studies, economics, environment, robotics, communication, marketing,) involved in innovation processes that think they can have an original influence on Mobility as a Service.

QMap for CCISS Services

From the beginning of July, at CCISS headquarters (Road Safety Traffic Control Room) in Rome, it started the new management of the Road Watch room and 1518 Response Center, by QMap, TTS Italia ordinary member, together with Infoblu e Nethex teams.
The new team, provide a monitoring service available 24 hrs/365 days, and operate in conjunction with the Polizia Stradale (Traffic Police) and Carabinieri response teams, utilizes MIT (Minister of Infrastructure and Transport) systems to monitor the Italian road networks traffic, supplying the relative on-request traffic information service.
The preferred support system, is once again the Web Traffic Alert (WTA) , to obtain a simple and intuitive representation of Italy’s mobility.
The WTA was accordingly developed and made available to the competent authorities of MIT (Italian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructures). The WTA features, roads coloring, shows the different levels of traffic fluidity, meanwhile, specific alerts indicate any possible anomalies regarding the day-to-day traffic viability.
Recently, Mr Danilo Toninelli, the new Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, visited the CCISS headquarters, under the guidance of CCISS Director, Mr Danilo Giaquinto.

Rome: good results from the semaphore priority to public transport

Experimenting with the semaphore priority to public transport on viale Trastevere, in Rome, is giving good results. The works, the result of the intense and fruitful collaboration between Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, an ordinary member of TTS Italia, Leonardo, Swarco Mizar and Atac, founding members of TTS Italia, have led to a functional system, useful to reduce the time waiting and increasing the frequency of trams. The tests started last April. Data processing will be useful to update the system in order to continue testing on other tram lines.
"The work done - explains Stefano Brinchi, president and managing director of Roma Servizi per la Mobilità - will be an indispensable and very useful piece of experience for experimenting with the traffic light priority that will start on Viale Regina Elena and Viale Regina Margherita. Targa Telematics is the technological partner of 4USMOBILE, the FIRST 100% electric car sharing SERVICE AVAILABLE IN THE SALENTO AREA

According to recent data, car sharing is becoming increasingly popular and is a phenomenon that is revolutionizing the way we use individual transport, and not only in metropolitan areas. Advocates of this are the founders of MOBILE4US S.R.L., the start-up company established in the Salento area to develop systems connected with urban and extra-urban mobility, which gave rise to “4USMobile”, the first electric car sharing service in the Salento area. Targa Telematics, a leading company providing solutions for vehicle renters and smart mobility, is the technological partner of this project.
4USMobile aims to promote an integrated mobility concept, in which car sharing is regarded not only as a service that is complementary to public transport but also as eco-friendly, since it only uses Renault's ZOE electric vehicles. The service, available throughout the Salento area, involves 97 municipalities in the Province of Lecce, extending as far as Brindisi Airport. It provides 45 widely distributed charging columns with a total of 90 charging points to facilitate not only urban travel but also connections throughout the province. The aim is to promote the use of electric cars and provide an additional service for tourists who flock to the area in the summer and at other times. Moreover, it aims to support the mobility of an area where public transport systems are unable to meet user demand. Targa Telematics' digital platform manages the technology of the service, from user registration to vehicle booking and various payment methods. With the mobile app, users can book, collect and return an electric car to authorised areas. Users do not require a car key, since everything is managed on their smartphone: opening and closing doors, navigation and the availability of vehicles, access to rental data and payments. Furthermore, the MOBILE4US service operator receives specific maintenance alerts and all information for optimizing fleet management.

The Port of La Spezia enters the National Logistics Platform
The Port of La Spezia has joined the National Logistics Platform (PLN) in recent days, signing the operating agreement with UIRNet SpA, an implementing entity on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, and a supporting member of TTS Italia, for the taking charge and management of the Port Community System of the port of La Spezia and interoperability with the PLN.
The Port of La Spezia has therefore started a new phase of collaboration with all the operators of the port community to satisfy needs and increase efficiency.

Viasat e Inaz together for an integrated management of fleet and human resources
Viasat S.p.A., TTS Italia ordinary member, and Inaz combine their skills in a partnership that aims to offer a combined fleet management services for fleet management and intelligent human resource automation.
The experience in Viasat's Satellite Telematics solutions and the know-how in the development of software, and solutions for the administration and management of Inaz personnel set the basis for a state-of-the-art technological suite, able to support companies in the reduction of operating costs and constant improvement of service levels. This is how iFMS (intelligent Fleet Monitoring Solutions) of Viasat and Inaz is born, a simple and integrated solution allowing to have a 360 ° management of fleet and staff: geo-referenced localization and management of the vehicles, through the WebConsole Viasat Fleet application , assistance and protection H24 with the Viasat Operational Center, web application Management Park Auto to control costs, consumption, contracts, deadlines of each individual means for efficient management of its company fleet.
Thanks to the installation of a modern Viasat blackbox, it will be possible to detect a series of data of the mean, which are then made available on the WebConsole Viasat Fleet. In this way, the location and traceability of the fleet allows a more efficient organization, optimizing and planning the best travel activities, encouraging a constant and direct dialogue with the staff on the move and ensuring the Fleet Managers optimal management in maximum economy and safety, achieving a significant reduction in operating costs. Future Mobility Week: here is the mobility of tomorrow

How will it be the mobility of tomorrow? Is it possible to experience it today? Future Mobility Week, with TTS Italia among its endorsers is the answer to both questions. From 1 to 5 next October, Turin will be the stage for the most complete review on hardware, software and services for new mobility, that changes habits, infrastructures, cities, society and the economy.
FMW is an opportunity to explain the mobility of the future, constantly evolving and bringing all the operators in the supply chain into contact, involving the most attentive audience in the sector. The program will include guided tours of the design and production excellence of the Turin area, cradle of the Italian automotive industry, opportunities for networking between the protagonists, and the Expoforum at Lingotto Fiere, on 3th and 4th October.
The Expoforum will be the main anchor of the week, including an exhibition area, a conference program and an experience area, dedicated to product and vehicle testing, with two focal points.
Future Mobility 2018, dedicated to the use and the context of mobility: technologies, applications and digital infrastructures for the mobility of people and goods of the present future, towards Mobility as a Service. The main macro-topics are: intelligent and sustainable vehicles, access to and services for mobility, new mobility in urban areas, intelligent and sustainable logistics, smart roads and infrastructures.
Automotive Cluster Forum dedicated to the “make”: an Italian review on hardware, software and the most advanced methods for the design and production of motor vehicles, which stems from the fertile comparison between Italian excellence and international references. The main topics are: advanced materials, design, production and assembly, technologies and methods, and finally subsystems and components. The Cluster Forum will be opened by a keynote session where some representatives of the most significant realities of the European automotive supply chain will present their point of view on the three topics that will then be dealt with in detail.
In both cases, will be strong and constant the involvement of industry associations, academic and research institutions and local administrations involved in mobility both at the regulatory and infrastructural and support levels for research and industry.
FMW has born from the experience of GL events and Clickutility Team, for five years co-organizers of Smart Mobility World in the world of mobility.

Smart roads for AD cars: the AUTOPILOT project in Livorno – 19 October 2018

On October 19th, in Livorno, the "Smart roads for AD cars" event will be held in the framework of the European project AUTOPILOT (www.autopilot-project.eu), which sees TTS Italia among the co-organizers.
“Smart roads” travelled by Automated Driving cars are not the distant future. Technologies already exist, but the added advantage and successful business cases depend on how they are integrated in user services.
The AUTOPILOT project is testing various use cases, in real conditions, at six Pilot Sites – five in the EU and one in South Korea – to prove that IoT technologies can advance automated driving.
Livorno hosts the Italian Pilot Site and we would like to demonstrate our results so far and discuss them with you.
