Panero: “Smart mobility among the priorities of Europe. TTS Italia ready to collaborate so as not to lose precious opportunity”
Developing MaaS in Italy, giving impetus to electric and green mobility, tracing a new vision of LTZ that accompanies the transformation of cities, putting the new frontiers of ITS at the service of local public transport and freight logistics. This is the 2021 vision of TTS Italia, which is a candidate as a privileged institutional partner for smart mobility in the choices that the country will have to face in the coming months in view of the European Action Plan and the game for the Recovery Fund. "This is a precious opportunity - explains Rossella Panero, President of the association - to give a decisive acceleration of mobility towards the future. On the other hand, our projects combine digital and sustainability in line with what is indicated by Europe".
What are TTS Italia's priorities for 2021?
I consider this to be the fundamental year to push the digitization of transport. Europe is offering us a unique opportunity that it would be a pity to waste. This is why TTS Italia is a candidate as an institutional partner for smart mobility. In recent days, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the Technical Mission Structure of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport which aims to spread MaaS in Italy. Mobility as a Service is a fundamental tool both to support a real reform of local public transport that enhances the role of collective transport and the quality of the service and to implement the tools necessary to face the "new normal" for public mobility due to the health emergency. Another key chapter in this integrated vision is sustainability. We have prepared the launch of a working group on e-Mobility in order to investigate possible actions to ensure a wide diffusion of green technologies for both the transport of people and goods. Furthermore, technology has to deal with social and urban changes: I am talking about the LTZ which have been an excellent management tool for urban centers, but now they need to be structured on a more flexible vision of mobility, they need to adapt to changing needs of government demand and also to a changing technology, more and more in line with people's needs. For this reason, in the coming weeks we will start a working group for the revision of the concept of LTZ which can provide important ideas for the revision of the rules regulating them.
The Recovery fund asks for digital, sustainable and immediate construction projects. What could be the indications for smart mobility?
We must be consistent with the message of concreteness that comes from Europe. One thing must be said: if we look at the ITS we find these three characteristics and we can achieve an acceleration on the timing of realization by teaming up. Local authorities and public administrations must run together towards a smarter mobility, in this way time is cut, but also costs are cut and a homogeneous vision is achieved that favors the diffusion of technologies. A good practice, for example, is the Cooperative ITS project presented by Naples, Rome and Turin to define and implement a model based on urban smart roads that communicate with new generation vehicles. Three big cities teaming up to push a new mobility paradigm. Strong public governance would therefore be desirable to support shared and widespread projects.
TTS Italia worked on the PNRR and drafted a steering document. What are the main indications?
We have extracted 7 priority proposals: the sharing of data by all operators, the health safety of urban public transport, the relaunch of the National Logistics Platform, the creation of smart roads, the implementation of the infrastructure monitoring system, the full activation of the electric vehicle charging network and a national plan for autonomous vehicles.
TTS Italia is also working on national and European fundings for the sector ...
Last November we started a working group, in collaboration with Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, a member of TTS Italia, to analyze what has been done so far and understand how to fully exploit European and national funds, reversing the trend that sees Italy at the bottom of the ranking for use of resources. In this group we involve the associates and public administrations adhering to the Platform of Local Authorities, with the aim of creating a dialogue between supply and demand, identifying critical issues and reaching the definition of guidelines, a sort of vademecum, therefore, for the benefit of the Public Administration, of operators and the academic world for the use of funds capable of facilitating and accelerating the spread of ITS and smart mobility in our country.
Finally, what do you think of the Action Plan for smart and sustainable mobility presented by the EU Commission in recent weeks?
I believe it is tangible proof that the topic of smart mobility has fully entered among the priorities of the near future. I share the Commission's vision and from now on I am putting the know-how of TTS Italia and its members in support of the institutions to put into practice the valuable instructions that comes from Europe.

We have several strengths in this sector: the first is knowledge of the domain in its various dimensions: from regulations, to service contracts, to management models. The transport sector is something we live with on a daily basis. The second is undoubtedly a multidisciplinary approach: we have a consolidated methodology (BXT®) that leads to collaboration between the technological, business and eXperience souls of the company, to analyse a project from all points of view: sustainability, feasibility, usability. The third is continuous research: we permanently invest in the study of the sector, collaborating with various interest groups, participating in conferences for dissemination, and producing public papers.
As of today, we consider of particular relevance the strong push towards digitalisation as one of the elements for a major leap in the way we conceive mobility. For this reason, we work closely with companies and other stakeholders on various issues, aimed at defining - for example - governance and possible implementation models of MaaS ecosystems, path models for the transition to full digital ticketing, understanding how mobility can become the backbone for the realisation of a Smart City, identifying which are the new indicators that stakeholders can adopt to govern and make more efficient the services provided in a data-driven perspective, outlining roadmaps for the implementation of programmes, from the most ambitious to the most immediate (Quick Win).
We have an opinion on many of these questions, but we do not imagine that there is a single answer: this is why we believe that the values of TTS, of sharing and joint construction, which are not only the basis of the mobility of the future, but the basis of society, are of great interest.
We will participate by offering our knowledge and experience and, of course, by treasuring those of our members.
The first step, for now, has been the participation in the MaaS Working Groups, with specific reference to Business Models, a very important and challenging activity, to which we believe we have given a concrete contribution.

Among the most innovative and challenging projects of the last year we can identify:
• the support to the creation of a MaaS ecosystem, which sees us involved in the benchmarking at EU level of the main solutions that have been implemented or are in the process of being implemented, the identification of a governance and service model for MaaS, the identification of a business model for the implementation of a MaaS System
• the definition of a strategic plan for the implementation of digital ticketing services, with business, technological and experience analysis to address a new industrial line for a stakeholder of primary importance in the global arena
• the support to the definition and implementation of a new MaaS service on a national scale for a national and European transport operator, which included service modelling and design of the consumer solution
• the support and implementation of a Customer Relationship Management System for a transport operator in EMEA
• supporting the implementation of a digital transformation plan for a regional transport operator, including program and project management support and technological support for the identification of innovative ticketing, tracking and data&analytics solutions.

Innovative mobile parking enforcement
Parking enforcement today is still time consuming and therefore costly task since traffic wardens need to patrol continuously parking spaces to verify possible parking offence.
Tattile is glad to present an intelligent mobile parking enforcement solution, allowing targeted personal intervention when the system detects an actual parking offense.
In the layout of this mobile parking enforcement system a driver who intends to park can either use a mobile parking App to book and pay a parking area for time needed. This can be done by entering the car license plate and the credit card data. Alternatively, where possible the user can pay directly at the parking meter by inserting plate number of the car and selecting how many hours the car will remain parked.
Regardless of choosing the mobile App or the Parking Meter, the registered data of date, time, license plate and paid parking time are sent to a centralized server. Through a Wi-Fi connection this external database exchanges information in real time with connected mobile parking enforcement devices, typically tablets, which are carried in police cars and are connected to a mobile ANPR camera. If a parked vehicle now exceeds the payment time, an alarm is triggered on the tablet and the traffic warden can specifically search the parking area with the ANPR system for the violating license plate and issue a fine.
The all-in-one Tattile mobile ANPR system includes a monochrome mobile enforcement camera for license plate reading as well as a color camera to additionally record the infringement which can be shared in an independent video stream. Its embedded monitoring software performs automatic license plate reading of all crossed vehicles and a real time check with the database. If a blacklisted vehicle with no paid or expired parking time is deteåcted and acoustic alarm is triggered, and the tablet display shows a photo cutout of the license plate.
The extremely low power consumption of less than 15W a 12 VDC enables power over the vehicle battery. The high-grip magnet allows mounting the mobile enforcement camera on the vehicle roof in less than two minutes and enables to dismount and use it in a different vehicle in very short time.
In addition, the system layout easily allows third party back office integration and tailor-made adaptions, such as sanctioning platforms of provincial councils or the option to send infractions to the Automated Complaints Processing Centre.

An alliance between OCTO Telematics and The European House - Ambrosetti in order to define an "Italian way" towards connected mobility
The main challenges concerning the future of connected mobility in Italy and in the world, the revolution linked to digitisation and the Internet of Things which will change the way of getting around and using the car, the new services and business opportunities related to connected vehicles, the link between data collection, use and management and mobility. These are just a few of the topics at the basis of the strategic alliance between OCTO Telematics, a key Italian player in the Smart Mobility sector and a world leader in telematics services and advanced data analytics solutions for the insurance sector, and TTS Italia ordinary member, and The European House – Ambrosetti, a professional group specialised in supporting companies in defining value generation processes.
The partnership will focus on defining, through theme-based round tables and a Scientific Committee composed of Franco Fenoglio (former Chief Executive Officer of Italscania; former President of the Industrial Vehicles Section of UNRAE) and Giuseppe Roberto Opilio (Regional Expert Italy, Greece, Malta & Cyprus, Connecting Europe Broadband Fund; former COO and CTO of TIM), an actual Italian strategy on connected mobility, starting from a specific focus that will be presented as part of a forum scheduled for Friday 17 September. The event will involve all the key stakeholders of the sector, to discuss - with the contribution of national and international speakers - the topics and priorities to be addressed for the competitiveness and success of Smart Mobility in Italy, an area devoted to have an increasing impact on daily life.
During this gathering, which will host various industry experts, diverse topics will be addressed, such as:

- Customer & journey experience;
- Relationship with infrastructures and urban systems
The field of connected mobility is a highly topical area for which the ministries for technological innovation and digitisation and of infrastructure and transport signed a memorandum of understanding in 2020 for the development of innovative mobility through research and experimentation of self-driving and connected vehicles. This attention can be explained by the large numbers generated by the sector: in 2019 the global value telematics services related to mobility amounted to 3.1 billion dollars and it is estimated that it could reach 9.8 billion by 2025. The entirety of services related to connected vehicles amounted to 400 billion dollars in 2018 and it is estimated that by 2025 it could reach one trillion dollars.
The issue of Smart Mobility is also closely linked to the spread of new generation vehicles: between 2019 and 2030 the number of self-driving vehicles (level 3 or higher) sold annually in the world will increase from just over 50,000 to more than 18 million, thus revolutionising the concept of mobility and the use function of the car itself. The topics of the alliance between OCTO and The European House - Ambrosetti also include identifying the priorities of action for the key players in the sector, especially those which concern the functional management and use of data to develop the ecosystem of connected mobility, an area of great interest in terms of business. Today, in fact, a vehicle generates approximately 25 GB of data per hour of use and over the next few years this value will grow to 3,600 GB of data generated per hour of use. An extremely important area in this sense is that of telematics services for the insurance sector, in which Italy represents the most important market in Europe, both in terms of penetration and in the number of units installed on board vehicles. It is estimated that in Italy there are almost 10 million policies based on telematics services, 24% of the total (2019 data) and the growth will continue over the coming years up to over 25 million units with a penetration rate of 55.3 % in 2024. Italy is also the second country in Europe for car sharing services, after Germany, with a market that should increase from 15 thousand vehicles with a turnover of 432 million dollars registered in 2020 to 44 thousand vehicles and 878 million dollars in 2025.

ATM Messina: new tools for a quality service. To Pluservice the tender for the construction of the AVM system and the shift optimizer
Pluservice, a Marche-based company leader in Italy in software solutions related to mobility, and TTS Italia ordinary member, has been awarded the tender launched by the Municipality of Messina for the construction of the AVM (Automatic Vehicle Monitoring) system and the operating aid system for ATM Messina. Thus, continues the path taken by the city company to modernize the management of the public transport service, with important repercussions for the employees and above all for users, citizens and tourists, who will finally be able to easily obtain information on how to best use the public transport of the city. In particular, with this project ATM intends to evolve the functions of purchasing tickets and passes already made available for years thanks to the collaboration with myCicero, the company (controlled by Pluservice) that produces the app of the same name, to ensure its users a service. that allows to know in real time the actual passage of the vehicle at a stop. This will be possible as from a single control room, in fact, the company's staff will be able to control the entire city public transport system, i.e. locate all the vehicles in service in real time, receive information from the drivers and thus provide forecasts. reliable on the actual time of passage of each vehicle at each stop, which will be transmitted on the app. A powerful search engine will also provide, in the same app, information on the best route to reach any destination by public transport available in the area, even in mixed mode (car + public transport). The monitoring of the ATM fleet will be carried out with MyAVL, the new Pluservice solution for real-time localization of vehicles and certification of the service. Pluservice will complete the intervention with the supply of Motus, its new cloud solution for managing networks and shifts, which will allow ATM staff to carry out important phases of the production process in a more effective and efficient way: planning of services on cartographic base, planning of shifts of traveling personnel and vehicles, optimization of scheduled services and management of daily changes. Six months is the expected time for the completion of all activities.

BOOSTLOG Launch Event: Boosting the impact of freight transport and logistics EU funded research supporting competitiveness and addressing the climate challenge
For more than two decades EU has invested in research and innovation (R&I) through various Framework Programmes, e.g. FP5 (1998-2002), FP6 (2002-2006), FP7 (2007-2013), and the ongoing HORIZON 2020 (2014 – 2020). This has contributed to the development of the logistics sector through the creation of new companies, implementation of concepts in practice and through science based regulation.
The BOOSTLOG project, a 3 year project funded by the EU through HORIZON 2020, will look into successful implementations of results from EU funded R&I projects and assess the impacts generated. It will also identify gaps and priorities for future funding programmes aimming to boost impact generated from fruture EU funded R&I projects to contribute to EU policy objectives, address societal challenges and increase EU’s competitiveness.
The project will map more than 160 projects funded by FP5, FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020, and identify successful implementation cases into the market and regulations and will develop actionable reports on various subjects prioritized by stakeholders. At the launch event, 3 organisations that have successfully implemented outcomes of EU funded projects will present their experiences, demonstrating added value of joining R&I projects.
To mark success of EU funded R&I projects, the BOOSTLOG consortium will launch a series of awards to give to those who have implemented EU funded R&I outcomes. At the launch event, you are invited to join the debate on topics, legible candidates, and selection criteria.
The project involves 12 partners, also including FIT, TTS Italia ordinary member.

Cortina 2021 mobility plan: presented the Situation Room to manage traffic, parking, shuttles
Realised by Concessioni Autostradali Venete CAV S.p.A., Veneto Strade S.p.A. and ANAS (FS Italiane Group), and TTS Italia ordinary member, the Situation Room for Cortina 2021 was presented.
There are several critical scenarios potentially connected to the major event in Cortina and which the three managing bodies have hypothesized, with a view to forecasting and preparing solutions that can be adapted to any type of situation: from increases in traffic volumes to the interruption of viability due to road accidents. The protocol implemented provides for specific traffic outflow plans through the identification of alternative routes and rapid information to users, advanced emergency response posts made up of traffic police units, local police, ambulances for medical assistance and the involvement of additional resources, in case of need, such as civil protection. In order to achieve this goal, two fronts in particular have been worked on, the one concerning the management of the roads and the one concerning the technical and plant engineering aspects. As regards the first aspect, a field study was conducted which, by analyzing the area around Cortina and the supply network, identifies any criticalities connected to mobility in the presence of large numbers. The protocols already used in similar situations by the three managers have been based on the new reality and a management model has emerged that involves several subjects: authorities, owners of the road network and bodies responsible for rescue and safety.
As regards the technical aspect, software and network structures were used which in Cortina will also operate through the mobile vehicles of the three companies, on which monitoring and video surveillance devices have been installed. They can be located and moved on the field, in the most sensitive points, providing the operations center with an always updated and complete picture of the situation. An overhead view will also be provided by the use of drones, which will send images in real-time directly to the operations room. The drones, controlled by teams of certified pilots and under the direct control of the hall operators, will monitor the main road nodes thanks to the use of high resolution zoom cameras, ensuring rapid and adaptive monitoring to contingent needs. The system will also be accessed by the owners of local roads and of course the police and everything will happen thanks to specific connectivity and dedicated channels, including an internal app that will allow the staff on duty to communicate in real time with the operations center and also to update the infomobility map directly “from the front”.
To coordinate the operational plan, a Situation Room was set up in Cortina, an operations room with staff and technologies made available by the three managers. The Situation Room will have the task of managing traffic flows and information to users as well as any critical issues, in coordination with the relevant institutions and constantly monitoring the traffic on the road network in the vicinity of the locations that will host the races. Through the integrated mobility platform Moova made available by Almaviva, technological partner of the Cortina World Cup and TTS Italia ordinary member, the Situation Room will deal with various aspects: real-time monitoring of traffic and occupation of the parking spaces dedicated to the event, monitoring of any anomalous situations capable of impacting the regularity and quality of road traffic and the public transport service, finally, timely and complete information to users on the move, continuously aligned with the state of occupation of the parking lots and any traffic disturbances.
It will be possible to follow the progress of the aspects connected to mobility and traffic also through the official mobile app of Cortina 2021, where there is an infomobility section containing all the updates in real time, useful for the user to plan his movements. It will thus be possible to plan the trip by looking for information on the place and events, be informed about the state of the road system and traffic events, orientate yourself for quick access to the race areas, be directed to the nearest free parking and reduce access times to parking spaces with reservation systems, and finally facilitate access to and outflow from the competition venues through real-time updates on the availability and frequency of transport. The user will also have the opportunity to find information on weather forecasts, active LTZs and the location of sites of interest, such as refueling, pharmacies, info-points and more.

Creating a sustainable future with telematics
Among the six pillars guiding Geotab, TTS Italia ordinary member, is sustainability, which reflects the role that telematics and connected vehicles can and should play in helping fleets reduce their environmental impact.
In this context, what does sustainability mean? Fleet sustainability encompasses all activities aimed at reducing the environmental impact of vehicles, and typically includes these other orchestrated elements, including: technology and innovation, legislation and policy decisions, and economic and financial incentives.
So what is the path to creating a sustainable future with telematics, that takes these elements into account?
BASIC ELEMENTS OF SUSTAINABLE TELEMATICS
There are a number of well-established telematics solutions that support and benefit fleet sustainability, including advanced heavy vehicle weighing management to reduce trips to weigh stations, route optimisation and fuel management reporting to reduce idling and improve fuel efficiency for all vehicle types. The common thread running through these activities is the efficient use of vehicles and thus their fuel consumption. According to the American Transportation Research Institute, around 60% of the cost of operating a vehicle is associated with fuel, tyres, repairs and maintenance.
So route optimisation, which includes managing fuel consumption and limiting stops with the engine running, has a positive impact on all these costs, improving vehicle use and reducing unnecessary mileage. The degree of impact depends on the specific conditions of the fleet, but the evidence suggests that the savings are significant.
TELEMATICS SUPPORT FOR ELECTRIFICATION
In the coming years, economic transformation will play an increasingly important role as it revolutionises the mobility chain and its business models. The shift to electric vehicles will help minimise the impact on the environment and the emissions associated with each stage of the vehicles life cycle.
A recent article in the Financial Times states that "the world's leading vehicle manufacturers are pivoting dramatically towards EVs", which, according to some projections could lead to EVs accounting for 50% of all new passenger-vehicles by 2032, as well as 50% of all vehicles on the road in general (including passenger, commercial and two- and three-wheelers).
The strong arm in this context will be telematics, which will be one of the main ways in which fleets can either manage their electric vehicles or consider switching to electric first. It is no coincidence that the number of makes and models of electric vehicles has grown dramatically in recent months, and that work is being done to optimise battery autonomy and the quality of vehicle construction itself.
In this context, the regulatory framework will increasingly encourage the mass adoption of electric vehicles by offering incentives or tax advantages.
REDUCING EMISSIONS
Sustainability is becoming a significant issue for governments and businesses to the extent that it will change the status of many sectors, including transport. At the heart of this trend is the strong need to reduce emissions: as reported by the United Nations, global temperatures have risen by more than 1 degree since the pre-industrial era, with the transport sector alone being a major cause of this problem.
NEW TELEMATICS SERVICES
Telematics over the years has provided Fleet Managers with new services for an in-depth understanding of fleet activities that were once unimaginable or extremely time-consuming. For example, it is now possible to predict when an on board vehicle system will stop working and, in the longer term, we can also incorporate the benefit of telematics into the vast field of Smart Cities.
We can now benefit from real-time data on the activities of vehicles within cities, providing information on issues that were previously impossible or very expensive to observe.
The future is now.

Kapsch: Europe´s first Pay-as-you-go tolling system on the A8 motorway Athen-Patras
Greece is the first country in the European Union to operate an electronic toll system in which car drivers are only charged for actual kilometers driven on the motorway. The new “Hybrid Multi-Lane Toll System” from Kapsch TrafficCom, TTS Italia ordinary member, supplements the unpopular existing payment system that charges drivers for an entire section of road, even if they exit after the first toll barrier.
“Kilometer-based toll billing is the future” says Michael Weber, Strategic Sales Manager of Kapsch TrafficCom. “The European Union sees traditional section payment as an unfair phase-out model and is pushing to charge only for actual kilometers driven. This method will be mandatory for new toll routes and a recommended feature for existing toll routes. This means that the changeover on the A8 motorway from Athens to Patras in December 2020 is not only groundbreaking for Greece, but is likely to set a precedent throughout the EU.”
To use the new service, cars will be equipped with on-board units that attach to the vehicle’s interior windshield . When the car enters a toll checkpoint, the system will automatically debit the toll costs from the owner's customer account and the barrier will open to allow the vehicle onto the highway. As soon as the vehicle exits the route, any overpaid costs for the entire section will be credited back to the driver's account in a mileage-based billing transaction.
Civic leaders of cities and towns along the Athens-Patras motorway have lobbied for the introduction of the hybrid multi-lane toll system. The reason is that motorists wanting to avoid the cost of an entire stretch of motorway 8 stayed on roads going through towns, which resulted in a considerable noise and emissions burden. New smart mobility of Cortina 2021: shuttle and travel management with Targa Telematics

Roma Servizi per la Mobilità: published the second edition of the Rome Capital Mobility Report
"This second edition of the Rome Capital Mobility Report (by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, TTS Italia ordinary member) highlights how in 2019 the overall transport system of our city has witnessed an important evolution. Scania: ok to self-driving test on motorways
Scania, TTS Italia ordinary member, has been granted permission by the Swedish Transport Agency to test self-driving trucks on the E4 motorway between Södertälje and Jönköping. The tests will occur in collaboration with TuSimple, which is a leader in the development of autonomous vehicles and a key partner in Scania’s and TRATON group’s investment in this field.
The trucks will enter commercial service with the Scania Transport Laboratory and will be loaded with goods for Scania’s production operations. The tests will cover technology according to level 4 on the 5-point SAE scale for self-driving vehicles, which means that the trucks are driven autonomously but for safety reasons are supervised by a driver. A test engineer will also be on board during Scania’s tests with the task of monitoring and verifying the information which is transmitted to the truck from the sensors that enable autonomous driving.
“In both the US and China, tests are already underway of trucks according to Level 4 on public roads, but as far as I know Scania is the first in Europe to test the technology on a motorway and with payload,” says Hans Nordin, who is responsible for the Hub2hub project.
Later this year, Scania plans to expand the tests to cover the entire route between Södertälje and Helsingborg.
“In the coming years, we also expect to be able to test the technology in other European countries and in China,” says Nordin.
Scania has been testing self-driving trucks for mining transportation in Australia since 2017.
“The experience gained from these tests shows that autonomous vehicles can become a reality in just a few years for transportation in closed areas such as mines and terminals,” says Nordin.
According to Nordin, so-called Hub2hub transportation – driving on the motorway between reloading centres – is the first kind of transportation on public roads where self-driving trucks can become a reality.
“We have come so far in the development of self-driving vehicles that the technology may be ready to be introduced to the market already within the next five years for this type of transportation. However, it will take longer before autonomous vehicles for driving on roads with two-way traffic and in urban environments becomes a reality,” concludes Nordin.
Scania’s partner TuSimple – with its headquarters in San Diego, US, and with facilities in Tucson, Shanghai and Beijing – since its foundation in 2015 has carried out millions of kilometres of tests on motorways to develop the self-driving technology for automation level 4. The company is currently considered to be the leader in the field.

Shift2Rail’s ‘4SECURail’ completes initial work on projects towards tightening cyber security and improving signalling systems across European railways
The two Shift2Rail’s 4SECURail workstreams have reached their mid-term objectives for the design of a Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) for joint EU-Rail cyber security, and a Formal Methods Demonstrator for improved Railway Signalling Systems. 4SECURail, a two-year Shift2Rail initiative aimed at delivering a co-designed process and tools for information sharing and cooperation for rail cyber security at European level and to support better interoperability of signalling systems for railway security, safety and efficiency, has announced that it has achieved its mid-term objectives for the design of a Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) for joint EU-Rail cyber security, and a Formal Methods Demonstrator for improved Railway Signalling Systems.
Launched in Barcelona in January 2020, the 4SECURail project is being carried out by a multi-national consortium of seven European specialist partners, also including FIT Consulting s.r.l., TTS Italia ordinary member.
Further involvement of a wide range of organisations and companies was achieved by the constitution of an advisory board (AB), set up at the beginning of the project. The advisory board, along with other important stakeholders in the European Railway environment, played an important role during a number of technical workshops that took place in June 2020. Initially intended to take place in Brussels, the meetings were held as online workshops due to the prevailing Covid-19 conditions. The project team working on the development of a formal methods demonstrator for improving the railway signalling system has already released the first version of the demonstrator and has defined the use case where the demonstrator will be tested: The handover of a train between two Radio Block Centres. The team is now working on the final release of the demonstrator and performing a cost-benefit analysis of the utilisation of formal methods in the railway signalling industry. The members of the consortium working on the design of a European Railway CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) collaborative platform have finished the design of the model and are now building the collaborative platform prototype. This platform will be useful in coordinating the Cyber Security response actions of individual railway security teams. Albert Ferrer-Bonsoms from Ardanuy and 4SECURail’s Project Manager, said “We are very proud that we have been able to keep this project on track during the difficulties posed by Covid-19 restrictions and specially the loss of Frank Wilson, a key member of the CSIRT Workstream on behalf of Hit Rail, who passed away on April 5th, 2020 due to the COIVD-19 outbreak. He will be forever in our thoughts. It is testament to the strong sense of collaboration and cooperation of all partners towards a joint target which will be beneficial to the rail industry and its security and safety.”

Smart Road: Anas towards the mobility of the future
Over 3,000 km of smart roads with a total investment of 1 billion euros. These are the values of the Smart Road Anas program. With great anticipation in Europe, and in line with the guidelines received from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Anas (FS Italiane Group), TTS Italia ordinary member, has chosen to invest in the Smart Road project, a preparatory technology for the development of Smart Mobility and future driving scenarios autonomous vehicle. The details of this program were illustrated during a press conference held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, as part of the World Ski Championships, Cortina 2021. The sporting event represented an opportunity to illustrate the first Italian experience of the project which it took place in the Belluno area. State road 51 "di Alemagna" (SS51) has been equipped with a technological infrastructure that will significantly improve the quality of travel in the area. This is the first road in Italy to be equipped with advanced technologies that will allow the exchange of infrastructure-user information and dialogue between users. A road suitable for communicating with new generation vehicles also with a view to using the most advanced levels of automatic driving assistance prodromal to autonomous driving. Approximately 27 million euros have been invested on the SS51 for the works relating to the smart road on an 80km route that crosses 7 inhabited centers equipped with 336 multifunctional stations and a control room. When the project becomes operational, the main beneficiaries of this extraordinary technological innovation will be the users who travel these roads daily for work or tourism. The development of the Smart Road on the 80km of state 51, with the installation of "Road Site Unit" with CV2X (Cellular Vehicle to Everything) technology, represents the largest single-segment coverage in Europe. The Smart Road Anas project affects the entire Italian network: in order to enhance user safety by allowing an increasingly complete, responsive and connected view of the infrastructure, Anas plans to invest 1 billion euros in Smart Roads and a first phase is underway with an investment of around 250 million euros, also thanks to European contributions that have recognized the innovative value of the plan. Along the route of the Smart Road, approximately every 20/30 Km, the Green Islands will be located, areas within which energy from renewable sources will be distributed, capable of powering all systems in autonomous matters, for the relevant module. In addition to the installation of charging systems for vehicles, charging and parking areas for drones are provided in each Green Island, which will allow the monitoring of road traffic in strategic points for traffic and will allow the planning and efficient management of traffic flows. traffic along the road. The Smart Road Anas project aimed at improving road safety and making traffic flows more efficient, is based on a complex digital platform that is articulated on the road network as a 'nervous system' with the support of technologies such as Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and advanced sensors through the development of the ultra-broadband network. The first self-driving car simulator at the Politecnico di Milano
Politecnico di Milano, TTS Italia ordinary member, has presented the world's first commercial installation of the DiM400, the most innovative model of driving simulator available on the market, designed and developed by VI-grade. In acquiring the driving simulator, the Politecnico di Milano received financial support from Regione Lombardia.
This installation is fundamental for the scientific research in the automotive field, as the simulator represents a unique tool for the university in the development of sustainable mobility.
On the one hand, the driving simulator will be applied for the design and conception of new environmentally friendly vehicles and for the development of components with innovative materials. On the other hand, the simulator will be used for applications related to vehicle dynamics, fuel consumption optimization, verification of the functioning of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and applications for autonomous driving. The development of sustainable motorsport will also be possible in the future.
The system, partially financed by Regione Lombardia, has been installed at our Bovisa Campus, and represents a technological highlight of a project promoted by the Lombardy Mobility Cluster - a project that aims to create a center of excellence for automotive subcontractors in the regional cluster of Lombardy, the fourth largest in Europe.
The driving simulator is a system consisting of a real cockpit as well as a large panoramic screen that reproduces a virtual scenario, simulating a realistic driving experience. In addition, the driver is immersed in a vibro-acoustic environment that resembles reality. When executing commands to the vehicle, the driver receives the same feedback that he would receive when driving a real car.
In the cockpit the driver is subjected to exactly the same forces as in the real driving experience, thanks to the simulator's movements and the integrated active systems of the seat and seatbelts.
The simulator is therefore capable of integrating the different mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic and computer components that determine vehicle performance and the related influence on driver feeling, as well as the environmental impact of cars under various operating conditions.
The DiM400 features an innovative cable-based handling system that allows a greater range of motion, exposing the driver to higher acceleration over a longer period of time. In addition, a new component called "Hexalift" enables improved vertical movement by extending the available travel. This, in turn, leads to an improved driving experience during combined movements.
The first advantage of the driving simulator is to demonstrate the potential of innovations in a safe environment before they are implemented in reality. In the same way, it is possible to test and perfect all advanced systems of assisted (ADAS) or autonomous driving.
Furthermore, the simulator allows to verify the interaction between road users and infrastructures, such as traffic sensors, before they are actually built. In addition, studies on driving safety, e.g. for disabled and elderly people, as well as studies on the interaction between more vulnerable users, vehicles and infrastructures can be developed. This functionality is particularly important in the context of sustainable and intelligent mobility to design a transportation system capable of reducing road congestion, pollution, and hazards. In addition, the simulator allows reconstruction of traffic accidents.
Finally, the simulator represents a fundamental element for teaching approach at the university: Topics of vehicle dynamics, driver-vehicle-infrastructure interaction as well as "best practices" can henceforth be taught in a specific and practice-oriented way.

Organized by the Order of Engineers of the Province of Turin, in collaboration with the Transport, Mobility, Infrastructure and Systems Commission, the webinar "The role of technologies in the era of post-COVID mobility and logistics” was held on Friday 26. The Secretary General of TTS Italia, Olga Landolfi, was among the speakers of the webinar organized by Club Italia and Ferpress on February 16 on "Electronic ticketing: technologies for the efficiency of collective transport. Ideas and proposals for the Recovery Plan ".
2020 highlighted how central, even and especially in the pandemic period, is the efficiency of collective transport systems: the request of citizens and institutions was high and more adequate. The new technologies adopted in many Italian companies and especially the solutions that have emerged from the world of research have experienced an unexpected acceleration. Supporting the digital change and the relaunch of the National Logistics Platform: the new article by TTS Italia on Strade & Autostrade
Digital and innovation in logistics were at the center of the debate that characterized 2020 in response to the Covid-19 emergency. The transport of goods has shown resilience, but already under the spotlight of the first lockdown the need for a technological upgrade in the sector became clear. Some small simplifications have been introduced in the wake of the emergency such as "delivery without proof" to limit interpersonal contacts, others have waited for programming times, but a control room has already started last September to assist the relaunch work of the National Logistics Platform. TTS Italia has implemented a series of actions aimed at supporting the digitization process and indicating its priorities.
